Book of the Month!

Did your child check the mail this month and find “Hooray, A Piñata!” by Elisa Kleven?

This colorful and lively birthday story encourages creativity and imagination. The first time you read this book, focus on enjoying the story and fun images on each page. Next time, try some of the tips below or in the back of your book!

Starting Up: Use a celebratory tone when reading the title. If you child does not know what a piñata is, teach them this new word!

Reading the Story: As Clara makes her birthday plans, talk about your child’s favorite birthday memories. As you read about the different shaped piñatas, ask your child to find them in the picture. Can your child imagine other piñata shapes that aren’t listed?

After the Story: Ask your child questions about the story. What did Clara name her piñata dog? How did Clara feel when she thought the piñata dog might get broken? If one of your child’s toy has ever broken, ask them how they felt?

Try making a piñata together or do some other craft activity that requires imagination!
