Book of the Month!

“Brother Eagle, Sister Sky” might have been delivered for your child this month!

This book shares a speech given by a great American Indian chief – Chief Seattle – over 100 years ago. His speech beautifully captures the beliefs of many Native Americans: the earth and every creature on it are sacred and precious.

Enjoy Chief Seattle’s speech alongside great illustrations of nature and the land of Chief Seattle’s people.

Try some of the suggestions below while reading the story with your child. Look for more suggestions like these in the back of your Imagination Library book!

Starting Up: Talk about the headdress on the front cover and how it indicates the man is a Native American chief. Ask if your child knows about the culture.

Reading the Story: Compare the environment and outdoors in the story to our own neighborhood. See if your child can find 1 thing that is the same and 1 thing that is different.

After the Story: Ask your child questions about the story. How did Chief Seattle feel when people wanted to buy his people’s land? Did he think nature could belong to anyone? What is something we can do to protect our environment?
