The ABCs of Active Reading

Active reading means reading a book with your child, instead of reading to your child. In active reading, you and your child engage with the contents of the book and go beyond simply reading the words on the pages.

Active reading works for children aged 6 months to 6th grade. It can be done anywhere – try active reading while riding the bus, during snack time, or before bed!

ASK QUESTIONS:

While reading, ask your child questions that start a conversation about the book. Try asking questions that start with what, who, how, and why. Look for answers that are more in-depth than a ‘yes’ or ‘no’ response.

BUILD VOCABULARY:

Use words in the story to expand your child’s vocabulary. Ask your child what words mean and connect new words with pictures in the story. For some words, try using your facial expressions or sounds to explain them to your child.

CONNECT TO YOUR CHILD:

Make connections between the story and things your child already knows, has experienced, or does each day. You can connect character’s actions to things your child sees you or family members do too!
