Core Sounders

Core Sounder (Alford 1990:15)

As better engines were introduced in the 1930s, Core Sounders became a prominent vessel type found in North Carolina. These vessels were constructed similarly to snappers but were longer. Since the new engines were more efficient, core sounders were able to grow as long as 50 feet. As engines continued to improve, these vessels became wider going from a one-fourth beam to length ratio to a one-third beam to length ratio. Although an older boat design, some fisherman in North Carolina operate these boats today (Alford 1990:14-15).
