Oyster Bateaus

Sketch of an Oyster Bateau (Alford 1990:24)

From the late 1900s to the first half of the 1900s, two non-North Carolinian boat designs became popular around the Pamlico River. These vessels were the two-sail bateau also known as a skipjack and the three-sail bateau known as a bugeye. These round bottom vessels were designed as oyster dredges and did not see much local influence unlike the sharpie (Alford 1990:23).
