The North Carolina Mosquito and Vector Control Association (NCMVCA) hosted a summer mosquito workshop held at the Pitt County Agricultural Extension Center from July 11-12, 2017. The workshop aimed at training Environmental Health specialists, biologists, and other vector control personnel from several counties and agencies across NC. Topics included guidance in developing a mosquito surveillance/control program, transmission cycles for Zika virus and other viruses of concern for NC, management of insecticide resistance, mosquito surveillance/trapping techniques, regulations/safety when working with insecticides, and public education in mosquito programs.
Dr. Stephanie Richards is the Vice President and Treasurer of the NCMVCA and organized the program for the conference. She also delivered a presentation entitled “Procedures for Monitoring Insecticide Resistance”.
About 60 people attended Day 1 of the workshop, including several ECU students working on mosquito-related projects with Dr. Richards. Day 2 of the workshop included instruction on larval mosquito identification (students used microscopes to examine larval specimens) and included 22 students (that was the maximum allowed for this type of course). Participants received continuing education credits for Registered Environmental Health Specialists and NCDACS Pesticide Applicator licenses.
