Dr. Guy Iverson joins the ECU Environmental Health Faculty as an Assistant Professor and holds an appointment with the Department of Health Education and Promotion. He joins after completing his doctorate degree and a postdoctoral scholarship at ECU. For the last several years, Dr. Iverson has focused on quantifying spatiotemporal trends in water quality in shallow groundwater and surface water across North Carolina. His past research focused on water quality impacts from nutrients and fecal bacteria originating from point (i.e. urban wastewater) and non-point sources (e.g., rural wastewater, stormwater runoff, agricultural inputs, etc.). His current research focuses on pollutant removal efficiency of best management practices to improve water quality in water resources that the public relies on for water supply and recreational opportunities. He plans to expand his research at ECU, which may include projects focusing on: 1) high-frequency data acquisition of water quality parameters to further understanding of water quality at finer spatiotemporal resolutions; 2) adaptation of innovative best-management practices to treat pollutants from wastewater, stormwater, and/or agriculture; 3) mapping soil wetting fronts and quantification of biogeochemistry in porewater and groundwater beneath septic systems; and 4) impacts and management of pharmaceuticals and personal care products and other emerging contaminants on water quality. Dr. Iverson brings nearly a decade of experience in water quality-related research in North Carolina and is eager to work with enthusiastic undergraduate, masters, and doctoral students interested in gaining research experience.
