Ectoparasites and Pathogens Associated with Rats

Dr. Stephanie Richards posted a Terminix blog on ectoparasites on rats and how they impact public health. The ectoparasites, which are pests that live on the outside of the host (e.g., fleas) of infectious rodents can deliver pathogens from the rodents to humans, which is especially concerning in highly populated urban areas. Ectoparasites can weaken the immune system of rodents, hence rendering them more susceptible to illness. In the blog, Dr. Richards identified various ectoparasites from rats in New York City based on a survey.  Pest infestations related to these ectoparasites can cause skin irritation and lead to other health issues.  Various control activities can decrease both rat and ectoparasite populations, including preventing rodents’ access to food, water and shelter through exclusion.
