Canvas Training

Campus-wide training begins this month. These sessions are going to be a broad overview of Canvas.

Register and find more offerings in Cornerstone.

Attendees are encouraged to bring a computer to follow along and participate in hands-on activities. Weekly training, walk-in help and working sessions will be provided by Academic Technologies, Faculty Leaders and technology staff in your college.

Before training, you will have access to imported fall 2018, spring 2019 and summer 2019 courses and content. You will also have a developmental Sandbox course. If you don’t know which courses you will teach in Spring 2020, you can use your Sandbox course to begin exploring Canvas.

Canvas Training Days

In addition to the campus wide sessions, check with your faculty leader or IT representative to learn about sessions being hosted in your college or department.  Academic Technologies will offer sessions weekly on both campuses and partner with your college to provide information to you. Training for colleges and central Academic Technologies will be located in Cornerstone.

Canvas will visit ECU on the following days. We’ll share agendas in our next update.

Early Adopters and Soon to Be User

As the early adopters get ready to launch their courses the rest of us will soon be able to login to Canvas and look at past courses to see how your content migrates over.  Many of you only teach a specific course in Fall Semester so as you work through the semester take note what content you are using and what is old and does not need migrating so you can clean it up before next Fall!

Answer to question I keep getting asked!

Yes all your content will be available when your course is migrated to Canvas.  It will look different and if you have many subfolders you might want to unclutter a bit.  You can also selectively import your content individually and set up your class from its shell.  Think about a bit of restructuring for the future!

Who’s counting?

There are two weeks left of summer session. Whew that went fast.  In preparation for transitioning to Canvas, take time to review what content is current and what is no longer relevant.  Since summer is time for weeding that’s what should be done with your course.  If you want to see how a course might look when migrated to Canvas contact this office.

Happy 4th of July

Mid week break but some may make it a long weekend.  Whichever it is we are zipping through the summer and fall semester is around the corner.  As you prepare your fall course site on BB take some time and review old content.  Content no longer being used should be purged so that when you migrate to Canvas next year you will have a clean course to work with.  Take a look at some start up Canvas videos here.

Canvas Early Adopters and soon to be Users

With the adoption of this new learning system it might be a good time to review your course, it’s structure and what content is being used and what might not be.

Course content will be migrated to Canvas but in a slightly different format than what you are used to in BB so take the time to review and weed out the old.  Content within folders within folders and within folders will not migrate as cleanly as one folder structure.

Name Change!

As we transition to Canvas Learning Management System this site has now had a name change!  We have early adopters here at our College who can share their experiences with this new system.  For those who are not part of the early adoption this may be the time to rethink, reevaluate and restructure your course.

Training will be offered continuously and I will be available to work with your department and/or one on one to transition and develop the best courses we can deliver.

In case you missed last week’s Canvas Update please note the following:

Blackboard courses listed below will be imported into Canvas and made available to faculty in Fall 2019. Varying degrees of work will need to be done to format imported courses for use in Canvas.  Instructors will also receive access to a Canvas sandbox course to explore the interface, features and formatting options. Additional imports will be by request; we will share this process with you in the fall.
