Nature Play Corps Volunteer Internships
Do you enjoy being in wild places facilitating creative activities
with children? Are you motivated to learn the playwork
approach to becoming a new type of green professional
working in the nation’s parks and refuge systems?
National Wildlife Federation (NWF) and the Natural Learning Initiative
(NLI) at North Carolina State University are looking for 15 highly motivated,
creative interns between the ages of 18 and 25 who are passionate
about interacting with children and families outdoors. Volunteer interns
will spend three weeks in wildlife refuges learning to be playworkers,
including designing and managing natural play and learning environments,
developing pilot “play animation” programs, delivering them to visiting
children and families, and learning how creative outdoor play can
connect kids to the natural world. The program will include developing
recommendations on how to expand this pilot project to other parks and
nature centers as well as designing a future installation near the Refuge
Visitor Center.
When:
June 6 to June 24, 2011.Where:
North Carolina in Dare County near Manteo and Manns Harbor; and Pea
Island National Wildlife Refuge, located on the north end of Hatteras Island.
Alligator River National Wildlife Refuge, located in northeasternResponsibilities:
in teams to design, manage, and deliver nature-based play programs in
two events for children and families visiting the refuge. Days will be long
and hours irregular, and may include some weekend responsibilities.
Environment will be hot and humid and biting insects may be present.
Interns will be trained in playwork methods, engagingSupport:
Housing and a $450 per week food stipend will be provided.Living conditions:
electricity, running water, and community kitchen facilities. No pets.
Interns will share living space equipped with A/C,Vehicle:
from lodging areas to the training site.
A personal vehicle is not required. Transportation will be providedRequirements:
equivalent, demonstrated interest in outdoor recreation/education and
parks and wildlife management, aptitude for working with children. Skill in
creative or performing arts encouraged but not required.
