NPR Internships

Ready for an internship like no other? NPR interns play a vital role in NPR’s daily operations in almost every division of the organization – from Communications to our programs to NPR Music to the General Counsel’s Office. Our interns work alongside experienced staff members to gain unparalleled experience in their chosen field and contribute their talents and energies to NPR’s mission.
One of the highlights of the NPR internship experience is the ability to take part in Intern Edition, a multimedia program produced, promoted, and launched entirely by our interns. The program is the hallmark of our internship program, and the debut of each edition is an organization-wide celebration. Experience the most recent program here.
Take a look at our internship opportunities, and let us know how you can support our work. And don’t forget that our Member stations offer internships of their own. See their websites for details. Thank you for your interest!
General Information:
Internships are offered during the summer, fall, and winter/spring semesters. Interns are expected to work full time, 40 hours per week during the 10-week summer semester and between 10 and 40 hours per week during the 16-week fall and winter/spring semesters. The winter/spring internship semester runs early January through late April. The summer internship semester runs the early of June through mid-August. The fall internship semester runs early September through late December. Summer internships offer a stipend of $8.25 per hour. Fall and winter/spring internships are non-paid, however, interns may receive academic credit if an agreement is made between the NPR Human Resources Division and the intern’s college or university. All interns are subject to the applicable NPR employee rules, including its Employment Dispute Resolution Policy. As noted in the internship listing, we offer internships at our national headquarters in Washington, D.C.; our NPR West office in Culver City, CA; in Chicago; in New York City; and in Boston, MA.
Eligibility:
A candidate must be a graduate student, an undergraduate student, or have graduated from college within twelve months of beginning the internship. Internship applicants must be authorized to work in the United States.
Application Procedures:
Candidates must complete an internship application form (you will need the free Adobe Acrobat Reader to view and print this file) and submit it with a cover letter and resume. Some internship positions require additional application items, such as a writing sample. All application items must be submitted as a complete package. Incomplete applications will not be reviewed. You are welcome to apply for multiple internships, however, please submit only one application listing your internship choices in order of preference. HR staff will screen applications citing multiple internships and direct the application to the opportunity best aligned with your background and interests.
Application Deadlines:
For the summer program, applications must be postmarked by February 15; for the fall program, applications must be postmarked by July 15; and for the winter/spring program, applications must be postmarked by November 15.
What’s the downside of having such a popular internship program? We get so many applications that we’re unable to notify applicants who are not selected for internships.
