SEC Sportswriter

SEC Sportswatch Internship Description: Sports Writer
SEC Sportswatch.com has an open Internship position for student journalists interested in covering athletics for each of the universities of the Southeastern Conference. This opportunity is best suited for those with a journalism background who will be enrolled through the winter of 2011. A high level of knowledge and interest in college sports is preferred.
SEC Sportswatch will be the company’s fourth conference site to go live. We are hiring writers now to produce content for our targeted launch date of July 11, 2011. For a preview of the Web site, please visit our live conference sites: www.bigtensportswatch.com and www.pac12sportswatch.com. SEC Sportswatch will implement the same template and style to maintain a consistent feel throughout the entire Sportswatch brand.
Benefits:
Please understand that while this is an unpaid position, you will benefit from great exposure to potentially millions of readers. SEC Sportswatch is truly a unique experience for college sports enthusiasts in that our site is devoted exclusively to covering SEC athletics. What separates us from the others is our dedication to all sports, both men’s and women’s, across the conference. Because our model is unrivaled, the Sportswatch collection of college sports sites has become highly visible in a short amount of time. Third-party consultants forecast that traffic to our site is expected to reach into the millions by the end of 2011.
In addition to the experience and exposure, we will also put together a professional, hard copy portfolio of all of your work. That way, when your time with us comes to an end, you will have a valuable tool to be able to present to potential employers.
Expectations:
We will be asking our Interns to write one or two articles each week, which equates to approximately 4-6 hours. We are willing to make adjustments to your workload to accommodate requirements for those applying for college credit. The scope of your assignments will cover all men’s and women’s teams, including non-revenue generating sports. The average length of each article is approximately 500 words, but some assignments will require more thorough coverage.
Please understand that our standards for writing are extremely high. While we understand many student Interns will not have a great deal of professional journalism experience, we do expect our writers to be proficient. Your work will be reviewed, edited, and evaluated on an ongoing basis. Through a consistent stream of assignments and coaching, our goal is to develop our Interns into confident, skilled professionals in the craft of sports journalism.
In the course of your work, there may be opportunities to connect with athletes, coaches, or other personnel in the athletic department. It is imperative that our Interns conduct themselves with the highest level of professionalism any time they are representing our company.
The work may be completed remotely (there is no requirement to report to a physical office location) and the term of the Internship can range anywhere from one quarter to a full year. Upon completion of the term, it may be possible to begin another term.
Those interested in applying for this Internship should submit a resume along with at least one writing sample, or a link to any work that has been published online.
