Politics Reporter
GENERAL:
The politics reporter will develop, research, report and writes stories on a variety of political topics with a specific focus on sources of money. The reporter will be part of our “Consider the Source” project, an examination of the impact of the Citizens United Supreme Court decision on the 2012 election and beyond. He or she will analyze campaign finance data and generate original reporting for blog posts, daily stories, and long form, in-depth investigative pieces. This reporter will work closely with our digital, data, and social media teams to develop content that can extend the Center’s political coverage across platforms in a variety of formats.
SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Develops and executes ideas/proposals for reports across platforms as part of the politics team.
- Conceives, proposes, plans, and researches ideas for blog entries, daily and in-depth investigative reports.
- Tracks daily money raised and spent by political organizations.
- Develops news sources.
- Participates in planning for politics coverage.
- Authors profiles of the nation’s largest donors and political spending groups.
- Gathers information and materials for reports.
- Covers stories as assigned by the Managing Editor – Politics.
- Uses data and gathers materials through interviews, press conferences, and direct coverage of events.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
- Collaborates with partners as assigned in developing content.
- Uses social media to develop and expand network for Center’s political coverage.
QUALIFICATIONS:
- At least three years’ journalistic experience.
- At least two years’ experience reporting on politics, including campaign finance.
- Demonstrated experience understanding, analyzing, and interpreting campaign finance data. Proficient in using a spreadsheet, such as MS Excel.
- Demonstrated excellence in reporting and writing for the Web and for blogs.
- Demonstrated expertise in all aspects of online journalism, including social media, basic data visualization and photography.
- Ability to handle multiple and complex projects simultaneously under stringent timeframes and changing priorities/conditions.
- Ability to work quickly and efficiently under deadline pressure. Must be able to report breaking stories.
- Ability and willingness to work varied shifts.
- Proven ability to consistently work well with others and commitment to the values and mission of the Center.
