National Public Radio—Entry Level Radio Journalism

National Public Radio is offering a 12 month entry-level position with the possibility of a regular full-time position at the end of one year.

The Apprentice Journalist assists in the preparation and publishing of online materials, particularly show rundowns and related online documents for All Things Considered on NPR.org. Occasionally assists in producing copy, interactive material and multimedia content. Occasionally assists in producing news stories for NPR.org. Works under significant deadline pressure every day. Strong spelling and grammar skills are essential for this post.

Essential Duties Include: Produces and edits show rundowns and related documents for the All Things Considered area of NPR.org, including text and headlines. Works under very tight deadlines. Accuracy, spelling and grammar skills are essential for the position. Works closely with All Things Considered editors and producers, and NPR.org staffers, to coordinate All Things Considered content on NPR.org. Ability and willingness to work weekends at any hour, including overnight shifts. Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications: Bachelor’s degree or equivalent, with training in journalism and/or research. Expertise in daily coverage of national news or general news. Familiarity with specialty topics such as world news, business, sports, science, music, arts. Solid, independent news judgment. Demonstrated skills in editing and headline-writing. Understanding of journalistic ethics. Experience maintaining high journalistic standards under deadline pressure, including standards of objectivity, balance and fairness. Willingness to learn skills necessary to work on a Web publication; ability to adapt to changes in equipment, software and workflow. Strong oral communication skills. Demonstrated ability to generate and execute complex creative ideas and to assimilate and organize large amounts of information. Ability to work independently and as part of a team. Candidate must be available to work any assigned shift, including nights and weekends. Ability and willingness to relocate. In the future, NPR may choose to transfer employees to other geographic locations. Severance provisions of the AFTRA collective bargaining agreement will apply should you choose not to accept a transfer.
