Pittsburgh Penguins Community Relations Internship

Reports to: Director of Public/Community Relations

Based at: One Chatham Center, Suite 480, Pittsburgh, PA 15219

Job Purpose: Assist with public and community relations projects and appearances.

Requirements: Intern must be a junior or senior in college and must take the internship for credit during the Fall 2012 semester. The internship is unpaid.

Key Responsibilities and Duties:
+ Assist with the coordination of team and alumni special events.

+ Assist with the department’s daily communications.

+ Assist with coordination and implementation of game day promotions.

+ Organize and fulfill charitable donation requests.

+ Participate in all charitable projects at Penguins home games (i.e. food collection, toy collection, special award presentations).

+ Write copy for www.pittsburghpenguins.com (i.e. media advisories, promos, features for team and alumni events).

+ Collect and organize all newspaper clippings of team’s charitable/community activities

 

 

 

Ticket Operations Internship (Fall 2012) – Pittsburgh Penguins (Pittsburgh, PA) 

Reports to: VP, Ticketing

Based at: CONSOL Energy Center, 1001 Fifth Ave, Pittsburgh, PA 15219

Job Purpose: Assist in the collection, organization and analysis of all current and potential ticket buyers and their purchasing habits

Requirements: Intern must be a junior or senior in college and must take the internship for credit during the Fall 2012 semester. The internship is unpaid.

Key Responsibilities and Duties:
+ Support the analysis of purchasing habits and target marketing initiatives.

+ Assist in all aspects of sales including discount, sponsor, corporate partner and promotional ticket campaigns.

+ Assist in the coordination of the Student Rush program.

+ Collect, organize and import new customer and prospect leads.

+ Use the Internet to research industry trends and opportunities.

+ Assist in the generation of surveys and the tracking of e-mail marketing campaigns and contests.

+ Assist in the implementation of special events off-site and at CONSOL Energy Center.

+ Fulfill requests for information from customers and prospects.

+ Perform various office tasks including faxing, mailing, word processing, etc.

+ Assist with specific projects as assigned by the VP of Ticketing and Director of Database Marketing

 

 

 

Pittsburgh Penguins Foundation Internship (Fall 2012) – Pittsburgh Penguins (Pittsburgh, PA) 

Reports to: President, Pittsburgh Penguins Foundation

Based at: One Chatham Center, Suite 480, Pittsburgh, PA 15219

Job Purpose: Assist the newly developed Pittsburgh Penguins Foundation with its mission – promote physical well-being, encourage teamwork, emphasize education and provide essential life skills to young people in the Pittsburgh community through youth hockey and other activities.

Requirements: Intern must be a junior or senior in college and must take the internship for credit during the Fall 2012 semester. The internship is unpaid.

Key Responsibilities and Duties:
+ Assist in the development of the foundation’s website content

+ Assist with the department’s daily communications and interactions with the public

+ Research innovative ways to market youth hockey in the community & fundraising initiatives

+ Assist in developing strategies to increase participation in physical wellness activities, creating preventative wellness programs and funding for treatment, and teaching the importance of education and teamwork as a life skill to community youth

+ Manage foundation contacts and funding sources

+ Foster relationships with businesses and organizations that offer their services and support

+ Create, edit, and proofread official documents and/or correspondences

+ Assist in the collaboration and design of marketing and fundraising tools

+ Collect and organize all newspaper clippings of articles relating to foundation events/recognition

Expectations:
+ Knowledge of MS Office products, internet navigation and research capabilities

+ Demonstrate clear and effective written and verbal communication skills

+ Ability to meet deadlines and maintain a flexible schedule

 

 

 

Staff Writer/Multimedia Internship (Fall 2012) – Pittsburgh Penguins (Pittsburgh, PA) 

Reports to: Director of Content

Based at: CONSOL Energy Center, 1001 Fifth Ave, Pittsburgh, PA 15219

Job Purpose: Under the direction of the Communications Department, the Staff Writer Intern supports the efforts of the Director of Content in managing the content and quality for the website and game day program. This is a writing-intensive position as prospective candidates will publish written material, and should possess strong writing and editing backgrounds. Candidates must be organized, responsible, professional, punctual and have flexible schedules to work afternoons, nights, weekends and all home games during the time of the internship. Responsibilities will fall strongly in the creation of written pieces on players, coaches and front office staff members. Candidate will also work with Marketing, Community Relations and Youth & Amateur Hockey departments to produce written features on those departments’ events.

Requirements: Intern must be a junior or senior in college and must take the internship for credit during the Fall 2012 semester. The internship is unpaid. Intern must be pursuing a degree in journalism, creative writing, communications or a related discipline.

Key Responsibilities and Duties:
+ Assist in the development and implementation of new content ideas

+ Prepare feature stories on players, coaches and staff for website and game day publication

+ Prepare stories highlighting community and marketing initiatives of the Penguins organization

+ Assist Director of Content with transcripts, proofing, photos and story content for game days

+ Manage day-to-day proofing and quality control of website content

+ Intern will have interaction with executives of the Pittsburgh Penguins Hockey Club, players, coaches and staff. The candidates will be expected to act in a professional manner at all times.

Expectations:
+ Must be able to work flexible hours including weekends and game nights as assigned.

+ Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with emphasis on writing and editing, required. Applicants will be asked to provide writing samples if invited to interview. Previous sports writing experience and knowledge of the Pittsburgh Penguins are a plus.

 

 

 

Media Relations Internship (Fall 2012) – Pittsburgh Penguins (Pittsburgh, PA) 

Reports to: Manager of Communications

Based at: CONSOL Energy Center, 1001 Fifth Ave, Pittsburgh, PA 15219

Job Purpose: Assist the media relations staff in game-night preparations and day-to-day functions within the department.

Requirements: Intern must be a junior or senior in college and must take the internship for credit during the Fall 2012 semester. The internship is unpaid. Candidate should be available to work all Pittsburgh Penguins home games.

Key Responsibilities and Duties:
+ Interns will record and compile individual players’ stats for the game-by-game section of the season in-review publication. Candidate should have experience with Microsoft Excel.

+ Record head coaches’ (home and visiting) post-game press conferences.

+ Research, write and edit in-game and post-game notes that are distributed to team personnel and local and national media members. Must possess excellent typing and editing skills.

+ Pre-game responsibilities include distribution of stats and game notes for the media and team management in the media room.

+ Interns will provide out-of-town scores from around the League to the media level twice a period.

+ Post-game responsibilities include the distribution of stats and out-of-town scores to both teams and all media.

+ Other responsibilities include 10 to 15 hours per week aside from game day tasks – including but not limited to preparing credentials, assisting in writing games notes and helping write/edit the season-in-review.

+ Interns will have interaction with executives of the Pittsburgh Penguins Hockey Club, visiting team personnel and local and national media outlets. The candidates will be expected to act in a professional manner at all times.

 

 


Sales and Marketing Support Internship (Fall 2012) – Pittsburgh Penguins (Pittsburgh, PA) 

Reports to: Senior Vice President, Sales and Service

Based at: CONSOL Energy Center, 1001 Fifth Ave, Pittsburgh, PA 15219

Job Purpose: Assist in the service of all current and potential corporate sponsors and vendors.

Requirements: Intern must be a junior or senior in college and must take the internship for credit during the Fall 2012 semester. The internship is unpaid.

Key Responsibilities and Duties:
+ Create Advertising Sales proposals using PowerPoint, Photoshop, Publisher, etc. with direction from Sales Staff.

+ Create various spreadsheets that track the components of the Advertising Sales Contracts using Excel (i.e. radio, video board, digital signage, print ads, tickets, suite nights, autographed merchandise).

+ Use the Internet to research various companies and prepare reports.

+ Perform various office tasks (i.e. faxing, preparing overnight mailings, typing, copying, binding reports).

+ Update and maintain two sets of Contract Summary Books.

+ Assist with game night operations, promotional giveaways and sponsor activation during home games throughout the 2012-13 Season.

+ Complete final sponsor activation through telephone calls and mailings.

+ Assist with various non-hockey events off-site and at CONSOL Energy Center (i.e. Season Ticket Holder events).

+ Assist in the development of special projects as needed.

+ Fill all autographed merchandise requests for the organization.

 

 

 

Youth & Amateur Hockey Development Internship (Fall 2012) – Pittsburgh Penguins (Pittsburgh, PA) 

Reports to: Executive Director of Strategic Planning

Requirements: Intern must be a junior or senior in college and must take the internship for credit during the Fall 2012 Semester. This internship is unpaid.

Job Purpose: The Youth and Amateur Hockey Development internship will assist and contribute to the organization’s objective of growing and promoting the sport of hockey in Southwestern Pennsylvania at all levels, including but not limited to the following:

+ Assist in the grassroots fan development efforts through youth hockey initiatives

+ Compile weekly or bi-weekly articles covering the PIHL, PAHL & local amateur hockey programs

+ Provide assistance on game nights for youth teams participating in an intermission scrimmage

+ Develop/update Penguins youth hockey social media accounts

+ Provide event support for a number of Penguins youth and amateur hockey programs, including Little Penguins Learn to Play, YMCA Junior Penguins, Penguins Charity ASSIST, Fantasy Camp and a number of instructional camps and clinics throughout the year

+ Provide content ideas for the newly created Pittsburgh Hockey Network website from local amateur hockey events, tournaments and playoffs including but not limited to: PIHL Outdoor Charity Series, PIHL Penguins Cup Championship Series, and the PAHL tournaments and playoffs.

+ Provide event support for a number of in-line and dek hockey related events throughout the region

+ Must be available on game nights as well as weekends

+ Must be willing to travel throughout Western PA

 

 

 

Pittsburgh Penguins Foundation Game Night Internship (Fall 2012) – Pittsburgh Penguins (Pittsburgh, PA) 

Reports to: President, Pittsburgh Penguins Foundation

Based at: One Chatham Center, Suite 480, Pittsburgh, PA 15219

Job Purpose: Assist the Pittsburgh Penguins Foundation with its mission – promote physical well-being, encourage teamwork, emphasize education and provide essential life skills to young people in the Pittsburgh community through youth hockey and other activities. Specifically assist with the implementation and management game night programs.

Requirements: IntIntern must be a junior or senior in college and must take the internship for credit during the Fall 2012 semester. The internship is unpaid.

Key Responsibilities and Duties:
+ Assist Foundation staff with the set up, management and closing of all game night programs

+ Assist with development of new programs and their implementation on game nights

+ Constantly work towards improving efficiency and streamlining game night programs

+ Coordinate volunteers for all game night programs

+ Schedule, delegate duties and assign tasks to volunteers for all game night programs

+ Solicit, help grow volunteer base for game night programs

+ Promote a positive image of Foundation to fans during all games

+ Drive sales of Game Night Auction items and Charity ASSIST Raffle tickets

+ Ensure proper tracking and collection of Game Night Auction sales and Charity ASSIST Raffle ticket sales

+ Maintain and create documents relating to management and tracking of game night programs

+ Other duties as assigned by Foundation staff

Expectations
