Editing/Reporting Internships – Dow Jones News Fund – Training in NYC

2013 Summer Intern Applications Now Online

PRINCETON, N.J. (Oct. 1, 2012) – College juniors, seniors and graduate students are invited to apply to the Dow Jones News Fund for summer 2013 internships in digital, news and sports editing and business reporting. The application deadline is Nov. 1.  More than 60 media companies hired 84 interns in 2012.

The Fund asks news media outlets to request 2013 summer interns by Dec. 1.  Each media executive can sign up online to request interns at https://www.newsfund.org, by registering as a “Hiring News Professional” in order to receive a username and password. Those with passwords should be able to login and submit their requests in a few minutes. For more details, visit the College Internships page on our website.

Participating news organizations must pay interns at least $350 per week for a minimum of 10 weeks and provide DJNF a $1,000 training grant for business reporters and digital interns and $1,200 for news and sports copy editors.

Interns will be trained at Dow Jones headquarters in New York and several college campuses–the University of Missouri, Western Kentucky University, Temple University, Penn State University, the University of Nebraska and the University of Texas–before reporting to work. The Fund covers travel costs to and from training then to newsrooms. Students who return to school after a successful internship will receive $1,000 college scholarships. Students must take a one-hour business reporting or editing exam in addition to completing the application forms.

Sara McCabe, a senior at the University of Kansas, said, “Working for the St. Paul Pioneer Press definitely prepared me for ‘real world’ newspaper editing. When I got back to school this semester, I was offered a copy editing position on the local newspaper without even applying because the editor knew I had been a Dow Jones intern during the summer. My Dow Jones experience not only gave me a summer job but also has made me more competitive in the workforce.”

Participating news organizations have included The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, WashingtonPost.com, The Denver Post, Los Angeles Times, Reuters, Media General, The Journal News, New York Post, Tampa Bay Times, Indianapolis Star, The Plain Dealer and many others.
