PURPOSE
The unpaid internship provides students with an opportunity to fulfill academic internship requirements and/or gain experience in a university setting while providing administrative and strategic support for the goals and objectives of the Career Center. The primary function of the internship is to assist in coordinating and overseeing the ECU HIRED program. HIRED (Helping Individuals Reach Employment Destinations) is a program that gives ECU students the chance to develop and practice interview skills during a practice interview conducted by a member of the professional business community. It is one of the Career Center’s largest and most popular programs.
HIRED INTERN DUTIES and RESPONSIBILITES
- Assist in the planning and coordinating of selected activities related to the ECU HIRED program
- Plan, coordinate and implement a training session and luncheon for volunteers
- Develop online, digital, and print materials to help students, faculty and volunteers understand systems and processes related to program operation
- Develop and script digital recording of training information for out of state volunteers
- Liaise with volunteers, faculty, and students by phone and email to convey timely information
- Field questions from students, faculty, and volunteers regarding program
- Coordinate use of Interview Stream (online interactive practice interview system)
- Develop, monitor, and maintain online interview registration
- Monitor relevant website content to assure accuracy and timeliness
- Maintain clear records and enter pertinent data in spreadsheets
- Maintain confidentiality
ADDITIONAL OPPORTUNITIES
- Assist The Career Center staff in coordination and execution of special events and programs such as career fairs, employer information sessions, on campus interviews.
- Represent The Career Center and assigned academic college at university sponsored and campus-wide events.
- Assist in development and distribution of promotional materials and career tools including but not limited to fliers, newsletters and general electronic correspondence.
- Conduct research for student resources containing relevant career, job, and internship information.
- Coordinate and complete special projects.
- Attend and contribute to in-house training sessions.
- Complete and effectively implement training received.
- Facilitate and maintain communication with students and faculty of an assigned college. Disseminate information regarding job openings, internships, service updates, and event notifications. Address student, faculty, and alumni questions and emails.
- Maintain internal job recruitment database and faculty/student distribution lists for assigned academic college.
- Provide general administrative support as needed.
SUPERVISION & TRAINING
- Work under general supervision of the Associate Director and specific supervision of Liaison to the College of Fine Arts and Communication/HIRED Director.
- Communicate through face-to-face interaction but also via email and phone as necessary. Purpose of interaction is to foster professional development, discuss internship assignments, projects, special events, and scheduling.
- On-going training will also be provided.
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES FOR ALL INTERNS
- Strong knowledge of Microsoft Office XP software (Word, PowerPoint, Outlook, Excel, Access and Publisher).
- Knowledge of Internet/online research applications and general communication technology (email, phone, fax, etc.).
- Excellent written and oral communication skills.
- Strong interpersonal skills.
- Ability to manage multiple projects and timelines.
- Superior organizational skills.
- Ability to speak publicly and conduct group presentations.
- Ability to work effectively within teams.
- Familiarity with small scale and large scale event planning and management
- Familiarity with media writing, copy writing, desktop publishing, social media
- Experience using HooteSuite, Facebook Admin, Adobe Photoshop preferred.
MINIMUM REQUIRED EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
- Bachelor of Science or Masters in Communication in progress. Prefer experience and career interests related to Event Management, Communication, Public Relations
ELIGIBILITY
- Must be an enrolled graduate or under-graduate degree-seeking student
- Must maintain good academic and judicial standing with the university at time of contract start date and throughout employment period.
