Chicago Public Media is one of the nation’s largest and most respected NPR-member organizations and is home to WBEZ 91.5 FM, This American Life , Sound Opinions , and Vocalo . We serve a listening audience of nearly 500,000 and broadcasts throughout Chicago and the surrounding regions. We have an innovative company culture and state-of-the-art facilities. In addition to studios at Navy Pier, we have reporters stationed at four neighborhood bureaus located in the Chicago area and Northwest Indiana.
The Afternoon Shift , is a live talk show featuring in-depth interviews and conversations with newsmakers, artists, writers, and innovators that airs weekdays from 2-4pm.
The Afternoon Shift has an opportunity for a production intern. Interns gain hands on experience with executing of a live daily talk show in a major market. During their internship, the intern will learn studio prep and screening phone calls for air. They will also pitch ideas for program segments, book guests, write copy and questions, and help prep the host. Interns will also have to opportunity to gather man on the street audio and editing segments. By the end of the tenure, the intern will have produced segments for air and help direct a live show.
Extra consideration will be given to applicants currently enrolled in, or recently graduated from a journalism program. Potential interns should have had some prior exposure to journalism, either through previous internships or student media. Prior exposure to broadcast journalism is helpful but not required, print majors are welcome. Interest and knowledge of Chicago politics and events are a plus.
This is a four month (16 week) internship with a 35-40 hour a week commitment. Internship hours are 9AM – 5PM. Interns are awarded a stipend of $5000 before taxes.
Internship begins May 2013. Application deadline is April 5th.
