Wake County Public Affairs Office Summer Internship 2013
Overview
The Public Affairs Office (PAO) supports each the County Manager’s Office by focusing on internal and external communications with various audiences to ensure that the County’s message is heard. The PAO has several traditional tasks it performs to communicate with these audiences.
The selected student will learn about and participate in the daily operations of the PAO. Interns frequently assist with projects such as:
- the employee newsletter articles,
- all employee e-mail messages,
- social media messages
- web content publication,
- producing and scripting the County’s monthly television show,
- preparing speeches for senior staff and commissioners,
- taking photos of County events,
- working with the news media,
- news releases, and
- participating in crisis communications and disaster preparedness drills.
Projects that the summer 2013 intern will likely assist with include:
- coordinating content for the County’s annual report,
- the opening ceremony for the Justice Center,
- logistics and public notices associated with facility changes, and
- employee newsletter publication and distribution.
Internship Specifics
A 20-30 hour-per-week internship schedule will be determined based on the applicant selected.
PAO interns are not paid, but may receive course credit. WakeCounty will pay for parking for the selected intern.
Qualifications
This selected intern will demonstrate above average writing and proofreading/editing skills. It is strongly recommended that applicants have completed at least two semesters of media writing and or public relations courses. Preference will be based on experience, writing samples and references.
