Social Media Summer Internship ASPCA – New York, NY

Organization: The American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA) is one of the largest animal welfare organizations in the world. The ASPCA provides national leadership in three key areas: caring for pets and their parents, providing positive outcomes for at-risk animals and serving victims of animal cruelty.

The mission of the ASPCA’s Social Media Team is to oversee strategies for ASPCA social media channels, engage in and monitor on and off channel conversation and monitor brand reputation.

Duration of Internship: Work Study/Internship position (12-18 weeks, 20-40hr/wk preferred)

  • The student’s participation is at-will and he/she can at any time with or without cause be removed from the position as an intern at the sole discretion of the ASPCA.
  • No part of this internship is required

Program: The Summer Internship will begin in May or June 2013 and end between August and September. As part of the Media & Communications team, the Social Media Intern will assist the Social Media Manager in blogger outreach efforts by developing media lists and pitch emails. Additionally, the internship will include the planning and execution of various social media events to help raise awareness for ASPCA’s program areas. Daily responsibilities include, but are not limited to, list building, online research, writing social media press releases, monitoring online conversations, coordinating event logistics, and brainstorming innovative ways to increase ASPCA brand visibility in the social media space.

Responsibilities:

  • Research top social media bloggers/influencers and evaluate their level of influence
  • Build and maintain media lists across different categories of bloggers
  • Research celebrities that would be relevant for ASPCA and brainstorm creative ways to reach them
  • Analyze and track success of social media programs
  • Research events and social media opportunities that could help promote ASPCA program areas in the online space
  • Research relevant speaking opportunities that relate to social media
  • Assist with planning and execution of social media events, both virtual and in-person
  • Stay up-to-date on new social media trends, bringing new ideas to the table

Eligibility: Students entering their junior or senior year of undergraduate study and who have an interest in pursuing social media marketing. The ideal candidate will posses strong writing skills and a very keen sense of social media trends online. Must be computer and Internet/search engine savvy to perform online research.

Salary: Hourly salary will be paid bi-weekly throughout the entirety of the Internship

College Credit: Credit hours will be awarded for completion of the full internship program.

Housing: Housing is not available and is the responsibility of the incumbent.

Deadline: All resumes must be submitted by May 24th. Candidates will be interviewed and a selection will be made in middle to late May for a summer 2013 internship.

Skills Requirements:

  • Excellent communication (verbal, listening and writing) skills and an outstanding attention to detail
  • Must be able to conceive, draft, proofread and edit written materials
  • Present professional online responses and comments and be receptive to feedback and editing prior to posting
  • Strong social media monitoring skills
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills and the ability to work independently and as a member of a team
  • Outstanding time management and organizational skills, and the ability to prioritize and multi-task
  • Ability to work rapidly and meet deadlines under pressure
