Qualifications: In order to facilitate the learning experience, the following qualifications are preferred. Candidate should be seeking a career in public relations, communications, and/or journalism. The candidate should also have good writing skills and an understanding of the political process. He/she should be professional, self-motivated, have the ability to multitask and prioritize, know how to research a variety of topics, have a good attitude, and be able to function well in an environment with short deadlines with a quick turnaround on projects.
Duties: Please Note: Students @ Work Internships Program dates are 9/23 – 11/29. Interns are paid at minimum-wage and relocation is not provided. Students must have completed their sophomore year in college prior to the start of the internship. In addition, students may not have graduated college or graduate school prior to the start of the internship (i.e. STUDENTS MUST BE ENROLLED IN SCHOOL DURING THE TIME OF THIS INTERNSHIP). Students seeking college credit are strongly encouraged to apply. Note to International Students: All international students will be required to provide documentation of proper visa paperwork prior to your arrival if accepted to the program.
Due to the high volume of candidates for Turner’s Internship Program, interested students are encouraged to apply for openings as soon as possible, as these positions will be filled on an ongoing basis. Competitive candidates are typically contacted after internships are no longer posted on the website. Future semester Internship postings will also be available after the prior semester internships are no longer posted on the website.
Interns gain insight into the publicity process while working at the CNN bureau in the nation’s capital. They strengthen their research and publicity skills while contributing to the network’s media relation efforts. Interns may have the opportunity to accompany publicists to Public Relations (PR) events, interviews, etc. The candidate will learn how to compile media lists, search for press clips, craft and execute pitches, and support publicists in day-to-day PR activities with Washington programming-both proactively and reactively. Interns may learn how to use LexisNexis, Cision, media editing programs to check the accuracy of transcripts, and assist in basic administrative tasks. The Intern’s schedule could vary and may include weekend and evening work, depending on breaking news and/or political programming.
