Summary of Position
National Geographic’s Communications department is seeking two interns for fall 2013. The Communications interns will learn to day-to-day media relations skills and will work closely with Communications department staff to help promote all aspects of National Geographic, including its magazines, programs and products. School credit is required.
Responsibilities
– Help with general administrative support of the Communications department
– Expand knowledge of media research and learn to compile media contact lists
– Learn how to coordinate press mailings and other media outreach
– Learn and expand knowledge of how to draft press materials (pitches, media advisories, fact sheets)
– Exposure to the planning process of National Geographic events, and help with event support
Minimum Education & Experience
Interns must be current college students (juniors and seniors preferred) working toward a degree in Communications, Media/Public Relations, Journalism or equivalent.
Knowledge & Skill Requirements
Candidates must be enthusiastic and detail-oriented with strong editing and writing skills (knowledge of AP style a plus.) He or she must be organized, with the ability to multitask under deadlines. Previous internship experience and knowledge of Microsoft Excel and Word are a plus. Candidates should have an interest in learning about the Public Relations field.
