DIGITAL MEDIA INTERN CSS – Local, Remote Sports Internship

DIGITAL MEDIA INTERN
CSS

Duties/Description:
Interns with the CSS digital media group will contribute to the day-to-day coverage of a “beat”, specifically reporting on sports at their University.  Each intern will be asked to stay up to date and informed about sports programs and the student athletes. Through interaction with CSS web editors, interns will decide how best to report on sports-related topics and how best to disseminate the information that arises. This will typically occur, but is not limited to writing blog-style posts on the CSS website.

Program Length: Internships with CSS are typically one semester.  Opportunities are available for fall, winter, spring and summer.  An internship with CSS will coincide with student academic schedules.

Hours: Interns will be covering sports at the University level, which means attendance at events (games, practices, press conferences etc.) open to the media will greatly enhance the internship experience and sometimes be required.

Interns should expect to spend some of their time experiencing live sporting events, communicating with student athletes and coaches through sanctioned media sessions and also writing about newsworthy topics found by the intern through reporting or assigned by editors at CSS. Interns will be expected to produce four to five short blog posts per week on assignment from CSS or through their own reporting efforts. A weekly schedule and assignment sheet will be set in advance.

Students participating in this internship for class credit will be required to meet minimum hourly requirements set by the school.

Travel: Travel will not be required during this internship program.  Communication between CSS management/editors and interns will primarily be handled via electronic communication.

Requirements: Students interested in a CSS internship should posses a passion for sports and journalism/media. Excellent writing and communication skills are expected as is a basic knowledge of social media and how journalists use social media to gain exposure. Interns should have, or be able to access, a computer with some form of word processing software. Interns will also benefit from using a recording device and camera to capture photos and possibly video (yes, a smart phone is acceptable in most situations). The student selected for this internship will have powerful research capabilities and must know how to find information electronically or through the school’s channels (ie. Sports Information Department).

Compensation: This is an unpaid internship but college credit can be attained.

How to Apply: Students should submit a cover letter and resume directly to CSS and well as at least one but no more than three writing samples (attachments or links to previously published online works are acceptable). Send all documents to CSS at css@csssports.com with “2013 CSS Internship Application” as the subject heading.
