Overview:
Job Summary:
The Communications Internship is a semester-long position for college students majoring in journalism, public relations or communications. Applicants must be either undergraduates (juniors or seniors) or graduate students who are interested in gaining hands-on experience in healthcare PR and must have their basic core coursework complete prior to doing the internship.

- Write, proofread and distribute press releases, media alerts, employee newsletter articles on DeKalb Medical
- Edit photos and video
- Post newsletter and news clips, etc. on bulletin boards throughout hospital property
- Escort media while on premises and obtaining proper consents
- Attend client meetings and assist with special events
- Monitor, log, scan and archive media stories and images pertaining to DeKalb Medical
- Monitor social media (Google alerts, Facebook, Twitter, Hootsuite, Socialmention, etc.) for mentions of DeKalb Medical and trending topics relevant to DeKalb Medical service lines and log activity and trends.
- Skill and ability to plan and organize and manage multiple projects
- Gather and summarize data from multiple sources and analyze using common statistical functions
- Performs other duties as assigned to meet the goals and objectives of DeKalb Medical.
Qualifications:
Skills, Knowledge and Abilities:
- Strong written and verbal communication skills, including public speaking
- Professional in appearance and manner
- Familiarity with Associated Press (AP) style; exercising strong proofreading and copy editing skills
- Proficient in Microsoft Word, Excel and Power Point software
- Poised to anticipate, manage, and adapt to change while effectively manage multiple tasks and priorities within a fast-paced environment
- Comfortable working both independently and as part of a team
- Self-motivated, proactive, hardworking and eager to learn; organized and detail-oriented
Minimum Education, Experience and Licensure Required:
Currently enrolled in an undergraduate or graduate program at accredited college or university
Completed News Writing or equivalent course with a minimum grade of “B.”
Completed sixty (60) credit hours toward Bachelor’s degree prior to starting this internship.
