Through the GLOBE (Growing Leaders on Behalf of the Environment) internship program, The Nature Conservancy hires students and recent college graduates to fill paid internship positions during a 10-week summer internship. This is a unique opportunity for students and recent graduates to bridge the gap between what is learned in the classroom and on-the-ground work in the world of conservation. Additionally, the GLOBE program provides interns with the chance to directly work toward a sustainable future for our planet on the side of the Conservancy, the world’s largest environmental organization.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

The Nature Trail Communications GLOBE Intern works closely with conservation staff and partner naturalists to plan and produce a positive, educational, and appealing experience for visitors to local natural areas. The focus of this internship is updating and producing audio tours on preserves owned by The Nature Conservancy or its partners in Maryland, Delaware, Virginia and West Virginia. Existing tours are posted at www.nature.org/audiotours . This includes the following functions:

  • Researches natural history and points of interest at each preserve to plan talking points for naturalists. Where possible, helps the naturalist tie visible points of interest to Nature Conservancy initiatives and priorities.
  • Meets with naturalists in the field and uses portable recording devices to capture their narratives as they walk the preserve’s trails.
  • Uses GPS to record location of points of interest along trail.
  • Uses audio editing software to process recordings into short audio segments.
  • Uses GIS to develop trail maps showing points of interest.
  • Posts these files to our Intranet for retrieval.
  • Collect still and video footage of nature sights on the preserves.
  • If desired, develop one or more Conservancy-sponsored geo- or earth caches on Conservancy land.
  • Optional field opportunities available as time and interest allow include assisting Conservation Ecologist with collection and management of data for biological monitoring projects and providing field assistance for the Land Management Team’s ecological management & restoration projects.

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS

  • One year of coursework towards degree in biology, communication, English, environmental sciences, or related field, or 1 year work experience in natural resources management.
  • Coordinating information from multiple resources into a finished product.
  • Experience withMicrosoft Word and using the Internet.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills.
  • Excellent organization skills, attention to detail and ability to work independently.
  • Completing tasks independently within assigned timeframes.
  • Ability to hike up to 4 miles on rugged trails.
  • Valid driver’s license and good driving record required.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Experience or interest in interpreting natural history for the public.
  • Experience using Global Positioning Systems (GPS) units in the field.
  • Experience or classes using Geographic Information Systems (GIS) to produce maps.
  • Experience, coursework, or other training in producing audio recordings.
  • Working knowledge of Web browsers and audio recording and editing programs.
  • Experience with geocaching and/or still and video photography preferred.

ADDITIONAL JOB INFORMATION

  • This is a full-time, temporary internship position with a position term of June 1, 2014 – August 8, 2014.
  • Housing stipend will be provided

AUTO SAFETY POLICY

This position requires a valid driver’s license and compliance with the Conservancy’s Auto Safety Program. Employees may not drive Conservancy-owned/leased vehicles, rental cars, or personal vehicles on behalf of the Conservancy if considered “high risk drivers.” Please see further details in the Auto Safety Program document available at www.nature.org/careers.

Employment in this position will be contingent upon completion of a Vehicle Use Agreement, which may include a review of the prospective employee’s motor vehicle record.

WORKING CONDITIONS/PHYSICAL EFFORT

  • Work requires minor physical exertion and/or physical strain.
  • Work environment involves only infrequent exposure to disagreeable elements.
  • Intern will be traveling alone to preserves in the mid-Atlantic area (2-4 hour drive from Washington DC area).
  • Intern will sometimes work alone in public areas of the preserves but not in backcountry areas.

SALARY INFORMATION

  • $12.00/hour for undergraduate students; $14.00/hour for graduate students and above

  • Applicant has exceptional academic aptitude and record;
  • Applicant is able to demonstrate a commitment to conservation of the natural world;
  • Applicant must be enrolled in an undergraduate or graduate program. Recent graduates applying for internship positions should be graduates of the past 2 years.

Intern Selection Process

  • Applications will be screened for eligibility, qualifications, experience level related to the project
  • Applicants will be notified of next steps in the process (within 4 weeks after posting date ends)
  • 2-3 phone interviews will be conducted for applicants selected to interview
  • Additional information may be required before making a final decision
  • All applicants will be notified of final selection by mid-March.
