The Marketing, Branding, and Communications division is to embrace the fundamental marketing best practice: placing our audience at the core of every marketing decision we make. Deeply understanding our current and future audience, their needs, behaviors and trends; and how they connect, discover, communicate, and share; will result in efforts that are effective and efficient because they resonate deeply.

The Audience and Community Relations intern is to be devoted to providing service to listeners and visitors to NPR.

Responsibilities:

The intern will furnish assistance through researching inquiries and responding to comments from listeners via email, mail and telephone calls, assisting with special events in Studio One and working with the NPR Ambassador volunteer program. Duties will also include administrative and clerical coordination for the Managers of the unit, including maintaining information retrieval systems.

  • Provides customer service by researching and responding to listener email.
  • Responsible for promptly answering high volume of listener and station calls in a courteous, timely manner. Calls and email comments are often highly sensitive in nature.
  • Responds to listener E-mails to NPR via Inbound E-Mail Management System. Assist in updating response libraries, and reporting mail volume trends to administrators as needed.
  • Acts as liaison between NPR and the public by providing tours of NPR facilities for the general public, visiting groups, and specialized station visits.
  • Works on special projects and assignments on an as needed basis for the Director and Manager of Audience and Community Relations.
  • Assists with functions related to special events.
  • Works with the NPR Ambassador volunteer program.
  • Generates reports as required.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

  • Excellent telephone skills. Professional, responsible work is a must. Ability to work well in high pressure environment.
  • Extremely detail-oriented and outstanding customer service-related writing and correspondence skills.
  • Strong organization and time management skills and ability to handle a wide variety of responsibilities. under tight deadlines required.
  • Strong research skills.
  • Familiarity with word processing, spreadsheets and databases on PC compatible equipment.

PREFERRED SKILLS :

  • Knowledge of NPR programming
  • Experience handling difficult phone conversations
  • Experience with HTML, Adobe Photoshop and Microsoft Excel
  • Retail experience a plus
