The internship program presents a hands-on learning experience and is open to current and upcoming sophomores, juniors, seniors or graduate students pursuing a degree in public relations, journalism, communications, business (marketing) or liberal arts at a college or university. Though uncompensated, the program would be eligible for externship status. The internship begins February 10, 2014 and ends May 10, 2014. The position is approximately 15-30 hours per week.
What you will be learning:
•How to compile media lists and reports, as well as develop press materials for distribution.
•How to execute and implement various public relations initiatives.
•How to research and utilize key online strategies (Web sites, social networking, etc.).
•How to work cross-functionally on various marketing teams.
•Customer service skills.
What you will be doing:
•Support media relations efforts through media monitoring, media list compilation, press materials development and distribution; as well as, develop and deliver “pitches” for media outreach.
•Assist with executing various public relations tactics and campaigns, e.g. Youth of the Year, National Boys & Girls Club Week, BGCA conferences and advocacy events.
•Update key press materials on BGCA’s internal and external Web sites.
•Work cross-functionally on various public relations teams, participating in meetings and conference calls.
•Offer superior customer service to internal and external customers.
•Perform other duties as assigned by the Public Relations Internship Managers.
•Demonstrate BGCA mission driven values of integrity, excellence and inclusion and integrate into work environment and ways of work.
•Adhere to organizational policies and procedures as described in BGCA’s Employee Handbook, Ethics Policy and elsewhere.
What we’re looking for:
Time Commitment:
15 to 30 hours per week from February 10, 2014 through May 10, 2014. There is some flexibility in arranging the schedule, both in hours worked and length of internship. Internship opportunities are available throughout the year. Each student internship requires a minimum commitment of 160 hours of service.
Education:
Candidates must be an incoming sophomore, junior or senior (undergraduate programs) or graduate student pursuing a degree in public relations, journalism, communications, business (marketing) or liberal arts.
Experience:
Must have proven success from school or work experience of strong leadership; the ability to work both independently and collaboratively; and be capable of multitasking in a fast-paced environment.
Skills:
Candidate must have strong verbal and written communication skills as well as demonstrate high standards of ethics, integrity and eagerness to learn.
