The Marketing, Branding and Communications (MBC) intern supports NPR’s work to broaden awareness of the NPR Brand; achieve measurable audience engagement and growth; cultivate new audiences; and support new platforms for revenue growth. The intern will work in the MBC division to stimulate communication amongst diverse departments and divisions while connecting them to NPR branding efforts.
The intern works most closely with NPR’s Corporate Communications department, which is responsible for executive and strategic internal communications; and NPR’s Media Relations department, which handles publicity for all of NPR. You will complete real, meaningful work as an integral part of the team where your contributions and ideas are valued. Working closely with staff from all sides of NPR’s MBC division, you will learn about how NPR publicizes, promotes and builds community around NPR programs, talent and breaking news.
Responsibilities:

  • Join a variety of planning meetings, where you’ll be expected to weigh in and join the conversation about how NPR can better connect with new audiences, and increase engagement with NPR listeners.
  • Assist with writing and basic Web work for NPR’s internal website, daily newsletter and announcements
  • Support the planning and implementation of meetings
  • Research to support publicity plans including researching reporters to contact, and compiling press clips
  • Press list building, research and maintenance
  • Drafting materials such as press releases, media advisories, pitches and bios
  • Social media support: opportunity to create blog posts, Facebook and Twitter messaging, etc.
  • Support the division staff

Qualifications:

  • Stellar writing, copy-editing and proofreading skills
  • Ability to think creatively and share great ideas with our team
  • Experience using PC and Microsoft Office software
  • Solid familiarity with social media including Twitter, Facebook, Tumblr, and Instagram
  • A passion for Public Radio
  • Detail-oriented
  • Flexibility and the ability to adapt to shifting priorities and projects
  • Self-directed and self-motivated

Preferred Skills
The ideal candidate will be a current student or recent graduate (within one year) studying Marketing, Communications, Media or related fields.
