The American Press Institute offers a paid summer fellowship for college students or recent graduates to contribute to and learn from the Institute’s efforts to conduct research, convene thought leaders, create tools and publish insights that advance innovation and sustainability in journalism.  This is a position for students with high levels of initiative, analytical thinking and ambitious ideas about inventing future models of journalism.

The fellow will be generally involved in Press Institute programs while also completing a specific fellowship project. Candidates should describe a proposed fellowship project in their application — examples include a research project, written report, technology development, or any other product that would help news organizations solve problems they face.   The selected candidate will leave the fellowship with new knowledge, experience, exposure to people and ideas and a project that makes a difference in the news industry.

Job duties:
        I. Contributing to API editorial content, including API Good Questions Q&As, newsletter curation and Strategy Studies
       ii. Identifying networks of thought leaders, helping to understand their needs, and assisting with events
      iii. Participating in other API events, programs and consulting activities
      iv. Completing a fellowship project
 
Requirements:
  1. Current student (undergraduate or graduate) or recent graduate
  2. 1 – 3 years relevant journalism or student journalism experience
  3. Demonstrable interest in journalism research, training and analysis
  4. Analytical thinker who can spot trends and identify new concepts
  5. Good communication skills and ability to thrive in a collaborative work environment
Details:
  1. 12-week fellowship is paid at $15/hour, up to 40 hours/week. If applicable, students may also receive academic credit in addition to payment.
  2. Reports to Executive Director and works with API staff
  3. Office location: Arlington, VA
