REPORTING, EDITING INTERNS Heart for the Game

REPORTING, EDITING INTERNS
Heart for the Game

Application Deadline:  May 15

Heart for the Game, a content and commerce website owned and operated by the wives of college football coaches, is seeking multimedia reporting and editing interns for fall semester 2014.

The website leverages the insider status of coaches’ wives and takes a deeper look into the family partnerships behind the college football coaching world. It features female voices that stir people and offers a storytelling platform that humanizes the coach, the team and the game. It moves the storyline away from traditional game-day reporting, deepening the connection to the game through stories only a coach’s wife could share — that only they could tell. One consultant called it football suffrage and we thought that moniker seemed apt.

Interns will begin in early August creating rich content for the site and they will continue through football season — likely late November, early December. Reporters will work live from their respective college campuses, creating long and short-form content with the goal of offering a real-time glimpse to these wives and fans through words, video, photographs and video. Students can determine how their internship reporting and editing for the site best fits into their fall schedules. We are flexible.

Interns will typically be journalism or communications majors with previous web news reporting experience. Reporting interns — rising juniors and seniors — will contribute to the site several times weekly, reporting live from campus on game day when needed. Editing interns will post and edit content from reporters, and will produce channels and photo galleries based on the best content from colleges and universities around the country.

Interns must have access to smartphones to shoot and record audio-video and photos, and also computers with software that would allow editing of digital audio-visual packages for submission.

We seek committed and energetic reporters with strong writing skills along with attention to detail and deadline. They must understand enterprise reporting and have a passion for ethical and responsible news gathering.

Understanding of AP style is a must along with SEO best practices. College internship credit may be arranged between FantanistaZone and respective colleges if the work meets such criteria as specified by individual schools (we ask that students contact their internship coordinator for those details).

Deadline for digital portfolio submission is May 15. Please show us your best work in 5 stories, or packages. We will choose one or more campus reporters from each of these key universities, with hires announced by May 1.

The schools included for fall 2014: Alabama, Auburn, LSU, Georgia, FSU, MSU, Michigan, Oklahoma, Oklahoma State, Texas, Texas A&M, Stanford, UCLA, Louisville, South Carolina and the University of Florida.

We are also looking to hire 3-5 content editors from around the country — they will work remotely so college affiliation isn’t crucial — who will manage the site each week under the supervision of Heart For the Game editorial staff. Please note in your cover letter accompanying your application whether you are seeking editing or reporting roles.

This internship is unpaid but will offer students valuable professional experience and solid portfolio pieces for future work. Students will be credited as staff correspondents and staff editors. The website was soft-launched last year as FantanistaZone.com and while that site is still active, it will relaunch under the Heart for the Game brand and a new template in the next month or so.
