COMPANY INFORMATION:

Each year the studio produces more than 600 hours of new NFL programming for NFL Network, ESPN, all major broadcast and numerous cable networks, NFL.com, and the DVD market. Additionally, NFL FILMS provides audiovisual and engineering support for other divisions of the NFL.

PROGRAM OVERVIEW
Participants in the NFL FILMS Internship Program will have the opportunity to experience one of the most unique learning and working environments in the Television and Film industries. There are several departments within NFL FILMS that offer internship opportunities. We will assign an intern to spend a majority of their time in a specific department, based on the applicant’s stated interest, course of study, experience and NFL Films’ production needs. Departments that have previously hosted interns include: Audio, Cinematography, Acquisition and Licensing (intellectual property), Graphics, International Broadcast Operations, Player Relations, Producers, Project Management, and Shooting Stage/Studio.

The award-winning staff is willing to assist and mentor those individuals with a serious desire to further their studies and achieve their career goals. Incorporated into the internship program are seminars that include industry specific topics such as freelance work, networking, navigating the employment landscape, as well as Q & A sessions with executives and former interns. Additionally, we provide time to observe and experience all phases of our operations in film, video and audio production as well as time to work on one’s own project to upgrade his or her skills and demo reel. ***Please note that we do not offer internships in the areas of business, sport management, marketing, advertising or photography.***

ACCEPTANCE:
The NFL FILMS internship is a paid program and is open to college students and recent graduates only. Applicants must be available at least three full-days a week and acceptance is contingent upon the outcome of a standard background investigation. The program is designed as an educational experience and priority for acceptance is given to college students who are in their junior or senior year and receiving academic credit.

NFL FILMS INTERNSHIP PROGRAM
DEPARTMENT DESCRIPTIONS:
– AUDIO – SOUND

This department is appropriate for those individuals interested in pursuing a career in post-production audio, television studio mixing and/or location recording and mixing. Interns in the Audio department will be exposed to all aspects of audio undertaken by NFL Films. Interns will work in our Sound Transfer department and gain experience with equipment used to transfer our 40+ years of audio from various analog formats to digital files, locating audio clips for various productions, and archiving radio calls from NFL games. Interns will also observe and assist our award-winning mixers with talent voice-over recording sessions, sound design, on-location recording and post-production mixing sessions. In addition our interns with have an opportunity to work with our A1 audio mixers gaining knowledge of audio operations on our shooting stage during live shoots, including setup, troubleshooting, wiring talent, and assisting the studio mixer. Priority is given to those individuals studying the art of Audio and all interns will be expected to learn the Fairlight Xynergi DAW, which is used extensively throughout the Audio department.

– CINEMATOGRAPHY
This department is appropriate for those individuals looking for a career as a Director of Photography, on location Cinematographer, Lighting Director, etc. Interns will work with our Emmy Award-winning cinematographers, gaining knowledge of and experience with film and high-definition cameras; learning proper care, maintenance, and handling of film/HD equipment from our extensive inventory, and acquiring real world experience working side by side with our crews in the field for various shoots. Interns will gain knowledge on how to light and shoot NFL Films-style productions and will be given time to light and shoot in various situations, while receiving feedback from our Cinematographers. Students interested in working in this department should have a basic knowledge of on-location film and video production and equipment.

– ACQUISITION AND LICENSING
This department is appropriate for those individuals interested in Entertainment Law, Entertainment Business or studying pre-law. The Footage/Photo Rights & Clearances department is responsible for acquiring and clearing intellectual property (i.e.: photos, magazine covers, and footage) from outside sources, to be incorporated into NFL Films productions. Students in this internship will build their research, communication, and organizational skills by working hands-on researching elements and/or the copyrights holder of the requested elements, securing permission for use in our productions and compiling license agreements and paperwork. They will learn the various types of agreements that we enter into, how to build professional working relationships (both internally and with third party vendors) and how to track expenses/detailed information for future reference.

– GRAPHICS
This department is appropriate for individuals interested in a career in motion graphic design for broadcast. An intern in this department will be gain valuable experience and the ability to upgrade their skills while working with our staff artists. Interns will be exposed to all aspects of the department including designing their own projects. Additionally, students will be working with our artists on projects in Photoshop and Illustrator; motion graphics design; 3D modeling, lighting, texturing, animation and rendering; motion and timing; typography; composition; and color theory. Preference is given to those students that have 3D experience, competency in After Effects, Illustrator, Photoshop, and a passion for broadcast graphic design. Interns will be expected to learn Cinema 4D, which is used extensively throughout the department.

– INTERNATIONAL BROADCAST OPERATIONS (Fall Only)
Students interested in exposure to Broadcast Operations & International Business are encouraged to apply to our International Department. The Department’s responsibilities include interfacing with international broadcasters on a weekly basis regarding their game selections; communicating with domestic networks (CBS, ESPN, FOX, NBC) each week regarding international participation; maintaining detailed transmission information; distributing encryption details; and support and troubleshooting during live transmissions. Interns in this department will assist our staff, gaining valuable experience dealing with our broadcast and international partners and being exposed to the complex operation of events broadcast to a worldwide audience. Please note that this department runs on a Sunday- Thursday schedule.

– MEDIA SERVICES
This internship is appropriate for individuals who are interested in utilizing their editing knowledge and expanding their research and business communication skills. The National Football League holds the rights to all NFL footage and the Media Services department is responsible for compiling and disseminating that footage to companies who have a licensing agreement with the NFL. The intern assigned to this department will assist in researching and gathering material for outside television networks, NFL teams, news stations, and movies/television shows currently in production requiring NFL footage. Utilizing our in-house search and database systems, this department chooses aesthetically appropriate shots based on the request to be filled and creates a compilation reel for each job. Interns will also assist the department in completing the department’s additional daily tasks. Individuals requesting Media Services must have editing experience and know Final Cut Pro. Please note that this is not an advertising or public relations assignment.

– TALENT RELATIONS
This department is appropriate for those individuals interested in a career as a Coordinating Producer or Production Manager. The Player and Talent Relations department is responsible for scheduling and coordinating shoots and interviews for NFL programming. This department works closely with our Producers, Directors, Field Operations personnel, and Project Managers to coordinate interviews for various NFL Films’ productions. Other responsibilities include coordinating travel for individuals coming to NFL Films or to remote locations for interviews and preparing and disseminating the paperwork to all involved in the shoot. Establishing and
strengthening relationships with all of the NFL Club Members, players, and players’ agents, is a key goal of this department. Preference is given to those individuals who have a strong knowledge of NFL players, are highly organized and have outstanding communication skills.

– PRODUCERS
This department is appropriate for those individuals interested in a career as a writer, editor or in a producing role involving the creative content of a show. Interns in this department will work with our Emmy Award-winning Producers and learn all aspects of the NFL FILMS style of storytelling. Producers at NFL FILMS are responsible for the content of the entire production from conception of the story, including locating footage, conducting interviews, scripting narration to graphic elements, and the final edit and audio mix. Interns will observe and learn about all facets of the producing position, including digitizing tapes into Avid Media Composers; researching the history of a player, team, or story; non-linear editing; logging interviews, game footage, and radio calls; and onlocation and in-house shoots. Students will have the opportunity to contribute to programs such as NFL Films Presents, A Football Life, NFL Top 10, Inside the NFL, team highlights, and DVD packages. Preference is given to those individuals with an understanding of non-linear editing software and an interest in storytelling.

– PRODUCERS – GAME DAY FIRST
This department is appropriate for those individuals who are interested in a career as a Television or Broadcast News Producer. Interns assigned to this department will be part of the production team tasked with putting together Game Day First, a live two hours show that airs Sunday mornings on the NFL Network. The intern in this department will assist the staff by: helping to construct the show’s rundown in ENPS, developing and overseeing the building of graphic elements, writing scripts for use on-air, as well as researching and logging video and sound elements. Additionally, interns will be in the control room and/or on set during the live broadcast to assist with guests and work as a stage manager. Please note that this internship is a Wednesday-Sunday schedule. Priority is given to those individuals with a good working knowledge of ENPS.

– PRODUCERS – PLAYBOOK
This department is appropriate for those individuals who are interested in the Producer Department but, as a current or former player or coach, would also like to utilize their in-depth “X’s & O’s” knowledge of the game of football. Producers working on Playbook are responsible for reviewing and analyzing the actual team coaching tape and cutting and producing segments for analysis by NFL Network on-air talent, coaches, and players. In addition, they are responsible for editing and producing segments for NFL players and coaches breaking down plays that were shot on location. Interns in this department have gone on to work for film departments and coaching staffs at various levels of the game as well as producing positions involving football analysis.
Individuals applying for this department are required to possess a high level of X’s & O’s knowledge of the game and should have played in high school; college level play is preferred but not required.

– PROJECT MANAGEMENT
This department is appropriate for those individuals interested in pursuing a career in the management side of film-making. Interns will learn how to assess the creative needs of Producers and Directors, and determine the fiscal and material resources needed to complete the projects. They will assist the Project Managers with creating a budget and managing the resources of the project through the entire production process and, in certain situations, assist with on-locations shoots. Individuals applying to this department should have a basic understanding of the process and equipment used in film production as well as basic business knowledge.

– SHOOTING STAGE/STUDIO
This internship is appropriate for those individuals looking for a career as a Television Director, Technical Director, Lighting Director, or any freelance position in television production. Our studios serve two main functions – as a live television production studio and as a shooting stage; interns in this department will have exposure to all aspects of both functions. Interns will gain valuable experience working with our crews in the studio, control rooms, tape room, video shading, teleprompter, etc. In addition, they will have the chance to experience ENG shoots (commercials, corporate video, and film-style shoots), which involve grips, electricians, prop artists, and film cameras. Students will have an opportunity to get hands-on experience with every piece of
equipment in the studio and will leave this internship with a well-rounded base of knowledge for the real world. Preference is given to those students who have a general understanding of television production and direction.
