Riley’s Army_ for Credit_Fall 2016 , Spring 2017

The mission of Riley’s Army is to provide support to children with cancer and their families in Eastern North Carolina. This will be accomplished by:
• Organizing volunteers to provide individualized support for the family to maintain a healthy home environment
• Providing educational, financial and logistical support for the children and family as they navigate along the difficult path of childhood cancer treatment
• Facilitate efforts of existing service organizations, churches and individuals for pediatric cancer patients and their families
• Raise awareness of pediatric cancer and advocate for patient centered care

Riley’s Army is looking for an intern for each of the three academic seasons: Fall, Spring, and Summer. Only one intern will be chosen for each semester in their department. This internship position will provide someone with substantial experience in nonprofit development and management, grant research, event planning, soliciting sponsors, and media exposure. Each intern will be encouraged to take a leadership role in spearheading their own fundraising and/or awareness project for the nonprofit, depending on one’s experience and hours of availability.

Responsibilities: This internship will involve a wide variety of fundraising-related responsibilities; including annual benefit auction item solicitation, data entry, printing, responding to emails and phone calls, and research. Duties include, but are not limited to the following:
• Proofread letters to donors, prospects, and allies
• Format and initially proofread emails and letters
• Print and stuff envelopes
• Answer emails and phone calls
• Be the point of contact person for certain events and activities
• Research new and current donors and grants
• Solicit auction items for events
• Help write minor reports, press releases, and media advisories
• Research and develop events in new fundraising markets
• Research event venues and caterers, and help to get quotes
• Depending on experience, help design invitations and event promotions
• Contacting businesses regarding upcoming events
• Network in the community by spreading awareness about Riley’s Army and future events
• Attend and assist in the organization and running of events
• Advocate for pediatric cancer
• Deliver meals to our children in the hospital, and provide respite care while their parents are absent
• Organize documents such as receipts and donations
• Co-Lead Get Hooked on Riley’s Army ECU Student Organization
• Other tasks assigned

Qualifications: We are seeking motivated and responsible college students or young professionals looking to gain experience working with a nonprofit. Prior interning experience is not a requirement, but we do require you have a strong work ethic and willingness to learn. The chosen intern must believe in the core values of the nonprofit organization and act in forwarding its mission. Expected skills include, but are not limited to the following:
• Significant experience and fluency with Microsoft Word
• Excellent written and oral communication skills, combined with a professional demeanor
• Must be comfortable in communicating with people and businesses
• Attention to detail, organized, and ability to make reasoned judgments
• Creativity and the drive to help implement new ideas
• Be comfortable working independently, but also working with a team and a supervisor
• Access to a computer with internet, a phone, and a reliable mode of transportation are needed
• A majority of the duties will be performed remotely via phone, text, email, and other electronic communications
• Some flexible in-person meetings may be required and will be scheduled with advanced notice
• Attending board meetings is mandatory

Compensation: This internship position is unpaid and is to be completed during one college semester. We encourage you to use this internship to gain course credit and to seek out “work-study” grants with your college, if that is an option.
