The Coordinator of First-Year Students will assist new students with their academic, social, and personal transition to Tennessee State University. Assist with the retention of first-year students and support activities and programs designed to improve student persistence. Assist in the implementation of First-Year Experience programs with an emphasis on new student orientation programs for first year students; help plan and deliver scheduled workshops throughout the year; and work closely with the offices of student life, admissions, residence life, international student affairs, and advisement.
The Coordinator will plan and coordinate all new student orientation and welcome week/move-in programs for new students.
Duties and Responsibilities:
Initiate and develop a positive relationship and maintain open communication with new students and family members at orientation programs.
Co-chair the Orientation Planning Committee comprised of representatives from various departments on campus.
Plan and coordinate all new student orientation programs for first year students to include freshmen, transfer students and international students.
Recruit, train, advise, and mentor volunteer undergraduate student leaders.
Assist first year students with the transition from high school to college.
Provide information about university policies and procedures, campus facilities and services, student activities, and academic departments to new students and parents.
Familiarize and assist new students with advising processes.
Perform office administrative tasks.
Participate in evaluation of new student orientation programs
Familiarize new students with the diverse communities that make up TSU.
Encourage first year students to get involved in the campus community.
Act as a resource to help first year students find appropriate college services.
Maintain contact with first year students throughout the year.
Perform other duties deemed necessary to the success of Office of First- and Second-Year Experience programs.
Qualifications:
Education:
Requires a Bachelor’s degree in a related field with 3 to 5 years higher education experience in student services/student affairs or a Master’s degree in higher education with 1 to 2 years higher education experience in student services/student affairs.
Experience:
Experience working with undergraduate students at a two- or four-year college or university with programs designed to assist students with their academic, social development, and educational aspirations.
Knowledge:
Ability to communicate with a diverse population; excellent public relations and leadership skills; knowledge of computer technology; knowledge of policies and procedures governing college/universities at the local, state and federal levels; knowledge of federal regulations regarding students’ records and privacy act. Ability to manage and supervise students; good organizational and interpersonal skills.
