Camp SAY is a 2-week sleep-away summer camp for kids who stutter and their young family members and friends (ages 8-18) from all around the country, and even the world. For an even better idea of what camp is all about check out these two videos:

Camp SAY 2018 will take place July 30th – August 13th at Pocono Springs Camp in East Stroudsburg, Pennsylvania. This year we are expecting around 140 campers, and we are looking for dedicated, passionate, patient, hard-working people to join our staff. New staff applicants must have experience working with children to be considered for the counselor position.
Because stuttering affects more boys than girls (about 4:1), we are especially looking for male counselors to join our staff. All staff positions are PAID positions.
We ask all staff members to join us for Staff Training starting July 23rd and be able to stay until August 14th.
Positions we are hiring for Camp SAY 2018:
- Counselor – Counselors fulfill two roles at Camp SAY: Bunk Counselor and Activities Counselor. During Activity Periods, you will lead/support various camp activities throughout the day, including sports, performing/creative arts, adventure/outdoor activities, group-bonding activities, and more. Whenever you are not at activities, you will be responsible for a group of 6-12 campers with a co-counselor (create a positive, unified, safe space in the bunk, help to wake up and get ready, help go to bed, help stay organized, eat all meals together in the dining hall, etc.).
- Support Staff – As a member of the Support Staff, you will support all areas of camp with various tasks and activities under the guidance of the Office Manager. This may include supporting the leaders of specific activities; setting up for activities, evening activities and special events; helping with transitions between activities; arranging/organizing/preparing supplies in the office; providing support on the bunk line and in the dining hall; accompanying drivers with travel assignments; etc.
- Travel Counselor – As part of the Travel Team, you will be entrusted to travel with campers and staff off-camp. When traveling with a camper, you and another Travel Counselor will become that camper’s guardian and caregiver until you return to camp. Travel Counselor responsibilities include the following: dropping off and picking up campers and staff members at the airport (usually Newark airport, about 90 minutes away from camp); driving campers and staff members to and from the hospital and other non-emergency medical locations, as needed; driving into town to pick up supplies or other materials for camp. When on camp, Travel Counselors are actively included in supporting the other areas of camp.
- Office Staff – As a member of the Office Staff, you will help keep the operations of camp running smoothly; help maintain a clean and organized office space; work closely with and support the Leadership Team; answer phones and correspond with families as needed; assist with data entry, supplies, attendance, memos to staff, camper mail, and other administrative tasks.
- Teaching Artist – As a Teaching Artist, you will lead/support various creative/performing arts activities under the support and guidance of the Artistic Director. Each Teaching Artist will work with 1-2 small groups of campers (2-4 per group) to create original pieces to share/perform on Visiting Day; tap into the campers’ imaginations and help them share their voices and ideas with the world; be responsible for transcribing the campers’ original ideas into script formats, staging and rehearsing the pieces, completing tech sheets, and communicating effectively with the Artistic Director.
- AV/DJ – As part of the Programming Team, you will help to bring joy to camp and help our campers be heard. Working closely with the Programming Director, you will be a crucial element in the following areas: Evening Activities (2 campfires, 2 parties, open mic night, and more); Meals (setting the mood in the Dining Hall with music); Special/Theme Days (Teams Days, Show Day – both dress rehearsals and performances, Arrival and Departure Day, and more); and Transitions. The AV / DJ’s responsibilities include: infusing more music throughout the camp experience; setting up equipment, such as microphones, speakers, video screens, projectors, recording equipment, connecting wires and cables, sound and mixing boards, stage lights, etc.; testing equipment before an event or activity; monitoring sound feeds to ensure quality; diagnosing and correcting media system problems; working with Camp SAY/Pocono Springs staff to ensure proper handling and installation of all equipment provided (and evaluating if additional equipment needs to be rented).
- Nanny – As a Nanny, you will create a stimulating, nurturing, and safe environment for the young children of Camp Directors and other staff members during the day; supervise the children’s activities at all times; plan and provide age-appropriate activities while also allowing children to engage in camp-wide activities; and work closely with Camp Directors and parents.
All staff members are expected to actively support, encourage, and engage all campers socially, emotionally, and physically (help with conflict resolution, self-confidence, strong communication; be a positive role model/mentor/great listener; show patience, enthusiasm, creativity, flexibility, generosity, etc.).
