The ideal candidate will be a graduate student in communications, journalism, digital media, or public health or related field with experience and interest in using social media to engage a community around discussions of health policy. You should have an understanding of best practices for digital social communication, from engaging followers on Twitter to getting people to click on a LinkedIn post or Instagram video, and an interest in building that skill through work in the nonprofit space. The intern will work closely with the NCMJ Managing Editor/Communications Specialist and interact with other project directors depending on their digital communication needs.
Requirements:
- Bachelor’s degree in English, Journalism, Communications, or a related field
- Experience and/or demonstrated interest in health policy and digital communication
- Excellent writing and organizational skills
- Ability to work as part of a small but busy team
- Strong comfort level with Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, and LinkedIn for both personal and professional use
- Knowledge of SEO fundamentals and best practices for social media and web analytics
Responsibilities:
- Assist with writing and sharing social media posts for the NCIOM and its health policy journal, the North Carolina Medical Journal
- Assist with media outreach for NCIOM events and newsworthy NCMJ articles (may include sending emails, creating social posts, and drafting press releases)
- Help identify and explore new opportunities for social engagement for both the organization and the journal (Twitter chats, video content, etc.)
- Work with on streamlined approach to gathering and communicating social and web analytics for NCIOM and NCMJ
