“One of the ways the ongoing pandemic is likely to impact the November election is the very real potential that North Carolina will have a shortage of poll workers available to staff precincts during early voting and on Election Day.
Check out this article for a good summary of the looming problem.
The average age of poll workers in our state is around 70, people squarely in the high-risk category for the coronavirus. So, it’s understandable that many of the usual poll workers will opt out this year, which is why the State Board of Elections is recruiting more people to join the pool of poll workers and serve as Democracy Heroes this fall.
We do know that every poll worker will be provided the personal protection equipment they need to ensure safety, such as masks, gloves and hand sanitizer. Counties are also spreading out their precinct check-in and voting stations to adhere to social distancing guidelines.
So, if you’re younger, healthy and have the time, please consider being a poll worker in this very important election. You’ll even get paid for it. Find out more information from the Board of Elections here.
We’ve seen problems in other states so far this year due to a shortage of poll workers and we want to make sure the November election here is safe, secure and accessible.
If you do sign up, you will be paid for your work and would be assigned either to your home precinct or another precinct in the county where you’re registered to vote.
