Location: This internship will be hosted virtually.

Salary: Unpaid, this is a volunteer organization and no members of the OFE committee receive compensation for their work on the committee. 

Start/End Date:  May 16-July 29, 2022

Application Deadlines:  Applications received by April 22, 2022 will receive priority consideration for the internship position. Interviews from the applicant pool may be scheduled and the position may be filled prior to the final application deadline.         

Description:  Ocean Friendly Establishments Communications Intern. 

The Ocean Friendly Establishments are a group of businesses who have agreed to adjust their daily business operations to be more ocean and ecofriendly. A volunteer committee of approximately 16 individuals assess business applications, recruit new businesses, create projects to support certified businesses, and promote the work of certified businesses. This committee is hosted under the Plastic Ocean Project, and is supported by the North Carolina Aquariums, local chapters of Keep America Beautiful, UNCW Plastic Ocean Project, and other local environmental organizations. Student Duties:   The Communications Intern will spread the word about the work of Ocean Friendly Establishments (OFE) through management of OFE Social Media posts and a monthly newsletter, and through the creation of materials to help individual businesses share their sustainability efforts. This Intern will be supervised by the North Carolina Aquariums committee representative, Andy Gould, and will work closely with the OFE Committee Chair and other committee members to create and maintain social media posts and newsletter articles. The Intern will also work closely with committee members to develop a final project which will benefit the organization overall. 

Qualifications:  

  • Flexible and positive attitude toward internship duties and schedules.
  • Must have good communication skills and be able to maintain communications with many committee members throughout the internship. 
  • Must be self-motivated and have good time management skills. 
  • Enthusiasm for learning and being involved with local grassroots efforts to protect our ocean. 
  • Strong written and oral communication skills and a working knowledge of Facebook, Instagram, and other social media platforms. 
  • Strong organizational skills.
  • Ability to conduct themselves professionally with committee members, certified OFE contacts, and community members.
