JOB TITLE: Communications Intern
REPORTS TO: Communications Manager
LOCATION: Habitat for Humanity of Durham
JOB SUMMARY:
The Communications Internship is offered on semester-long terms, three times throughout the year (Spring, Summer, and Fall). Interns are asked to commit around 20 hours per week. The intern is responsible for assisting the Communications Manager to advance the organization’s mission as well as increase community awareness and funding streams for Habitat for Humanity of Durham.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
Communications and Marketing:
Assist with media and donor inquiries.
Assist in writing and sending press releases and media alerts, pitching stories to the various media: locally, regionally and nationally.
Help staff by tracking media coverage, updating media contacts, as well as researching and scheduling interviews.
Help with developing and maintaining current public speaking materials for presentations.
Assist with advertisement design and placement.
Help maintain current website.
Help develop and design brochures for various Habitat for Humanity of Durham programs.
Assist with quarterly newsletters for distribution to donors and friends of Habitat for Humanity of Durham including but not limited to: solicitation of human interest stories from staff, layout and design, and arrangements for printing and mailing.
Assist in shooting and editing video for donors, presentations, and website.
Assist with all social media.
Special Events:
Assist staff in coordinating and marketing special events and other community-based fundraising programs.
Assist with writing and submitting all media releases for current or special events to various media sources.
Assist in arranging for special media coverage via television and radio stations on Habitat for Humanity of Durham events.
QUALIFICATIONS:
Must be a junior or senior pursuing a degree in Communication, Graphic Design, Journalism or Marketing.
Working knowledge of Adobe Creative Suite and Microsoft Office.
Familiarity of AP Stylebook.
Excellent written and oral communication skills.
Internships through Habitat for Humanity of Durham are on a voluntary basis. College credit may be available depending on the requirements of your professor and academic program.
