About the Wake County Public Affairs Office:

The Public Affairs Office (PAO) supports each the County Manager’s Office by focusing on internal and external communications with various audiences to ensure that the County’s message is heard. The PAO has several traditional tasks it performs to communicate with these audiences. The PAO publishes the County’s employee newsletter, Insights, for internal communications, while also relying on broadcast e-mail messages for issues of time-sensitive importance. External communication tasks involve assisting in the development of the County Manager’s budget message; producing the County’s television show, WakeGov TV; preparing speeches and press releases on County issues; coordinating responses to media inquiries; publishing the annual report on County initiatives and activities; writing and distributing the meeting highlights from the Board of Commissioners’ meetings; and participating in crisis communications and disaster preparedness drills.

Job Description:

The selected student will learn about and participate in the daily operations of the PAO.

During the internship, the student will assist with routine projects including news releases, photography shoots, basic website maintenance, possible TV show production, employee newsletter and Board of Commissioners memo preparations, as well as special projects, and events planning and execution. This may include press briefings, media photo opportunities and other Board of Commissioners speaking engagements throughout Wake County. This person will also assist staff with ongoing organizational projects.

A 10-20 hour-per-week schedule will be determined based on the applicant selected.

PAO interns are not paid, but may receive course credit. Wake County will pay for parking for the selected intern.

Qualifications:

This selected intern will demonstrate above average writing and proofreading/editing skills. It is strongly recommended that applicants have completed at least two semesters of media writing and or public relations courses. Preference will be based on experience, writing samples and references.
