NPR is looking for an experienced and talented journalist to lead the network’s business and economics coverage. The Senior Business Editor leads a team of reporters and editors based in Washington, New York and bureaus around the country, and coordinates closely with NPR’s 16 domestic bureaus and 17 foreign bureaus to provide economics news for All Things Considered, Morning Edition and other programs, as well as online at npr.org . We’re looking to expand the global reach of our economics reporting and to enhance that coverage across platforms. A priority for the job will be coordinating coverage with the network’s award-winning Planet Money team.

As Senior Business Editor, you will oversee the network’s reporting on a wide range of subjects, including fiscal policy, the Federal Reserve, growth and inequality, technology, financial markets, energy and more. You will be counted on as a newsroom leader who covers breaking news with energy and enterprise projects with creativity and drive. Your expertise will be relied upon throughout the network as you help make complex subjects understandable to an audience of 27 million listeners.

Essential Duties Include:
Has significant responsibility for editorial planning and coordination of coverage. Tracks ongoing flow of business news, maintains contacts with news sources, keeps current with topics of interest to the desk and maintains files of future events and issues. Maintains internal contacts and assists program producers in achieving consistent, accurate and balanced coverage. When necessary, heads team of production staff working on special projects. Tracks station, freelance and staff submissions and assignments. Authorizes payments to stations and freelancers. Supervises assignments and provides editorial guidance to staff, station and freelance reporters and production staff. Has regular discussions with business reporting team about story ideas, helps shape the content and scope of story proposals, suggests stories and specific areas of inquiry and makes final assignments. Works with hosts, NewsDesk, digital media and other staff to determine proper approach to stories, subjects to be discussed and treated, and individuals to be interviewed. Assists hosts and staff in establishing contacts. Monitors progress of assigned stories to ensure that the stories are of the highest quality and that reasonable production schedules are maintained. Supervises preparation of air and online material and is responsible for editorial integrity and quality of that material. Ensures that all material aired and published meets NPR programs’ standards and practices, including standards of fairness, objectivity and balance. Provides editorial guidance to staff, station and freelance reporters so they can properly organize and focus their stories. Listens to prepared stories, suggests changes that make pieces concise, coherent, comprehensive and interesting, copy edits stories and writes material as needed. Determines when a story is ready for air. Ensures that speculative submissions from stations and freelancers are auditioned to determine suitability for airing. Monitors programming and provides critiques. Monitors pieces and host interviews, especially those to which he/she is assigned, in a consistent manner. Regularly has critical discussions about pieces with reporters and editors, and with the Senior National Editor. Has significant responsibility for independently evaluating the performance of staff. Prepares performance reviews of staff members under his or her supervision, as determined by the Senior National Editor. Makes hiring recommendations for staff under his or her supervision, in consultation with the Senior National Editor and others as designated. Recommends salary levels of staff under his or her supervision, in consultation with the Senior National Editor. Provides support to Senior National Editor as needed. Acts as liaison to shows, desks, Newscast and online as assigned by Senior Editor. Assists in planning and monitoring the business unit’s annual budgets and in monitoring current spending. Coordinates business unit staff schedules, submits and approves time sheets and maintains other personnel records as needed. Tracks overtime and travel expenditures. Directly supervises other editors. Assumes additional workload of other editors when they are away. Conducts outreach, answers correspondence, represents the unit in public forums, organizes internships, maintains station relations, and works with the promotion and public information departments. Qualifications: Education: Bachelor’s degree or equivalent combination of education and work experience.

Required:
At least 10 years’ experience as a news reporter or editor, including demonstrated experience covering business and economics, including: Investigative stories, including the generation of story ideas and the research and development of such stories. Feature reports, including the development of topics and the organization and presentation of lengthy articles or programs.

Considerable knowledge of:
Business and economics and national affairs, including, but not limited to: the stock markets, key industries, technology and manufacturing. Regional politics and issues. Thorough knowledge of news and feature reporting techniques and demonstrated writing ability. Considerable skill in both news and feature editing. Demonstrated skill in oral presentation. Understanding and use of principles of effective management. Thorough knowledge of broadcast writing and audio production.

Preferred:
