INTERN POSITIONS ARE AVAILABLE IN THE FOLLOWING DEPARTMENTS:

Business Development Department

The Business Development department is responsible for the identification, execution and implementation of new licensing and business opportunities with distribution, marketing and technology partners. These opportunities support the growth and diversification strategy of HFA and its music publisher affiliates.

Responsibilities

• Analyze the digital music marketplace, technologies and players and write research reports

• Research copyright ownership information for musical composition

• Assist with special projects as required

Distributions Department

The Distribution Department manages timely royalty payments and statements processing for music publishers and ensures that licensee royalty reports are properly loaded into our system, accurately matched to HFA license numbers, HFA song codes, and publisher accounts. Additionally, the Department converts paper based royalty reports to electronic formats using an Optical Character Recognition Technology (OCR) for electronic distribution. The Department also ensures that the relevant checks, statements, and data files are processed and prepared for delivery to publisher-principals within the appropriate distribution quarter. Specific accounts are assigned to Distribution Analysts and Processors for daily handling, which includes formatting data files for computer matching systems utilizing Microsoft Excel and other applicable applications.

Responsibilities

• Process royalty payments for licensee accounts using various Distribution formats

• Scan paper-based royalty statements for conversion to electronic processing

• Special projects as assigned by management

Licensing / Data Management Departments

The Licensing Department processes and verifies licensing requests for the reproduction of musical compositions on behalf of our publisher principals. Our goal is to obtain complete and accurate information from licensees to assure efficient handling of all requests in a timely manner which results in royalty collections on behalf of our publisher clients.

The primary purpose of the Data Management Department is to rationalize and integrate the process and strategy of managing musical composition, sound recordings, licensing and royalty data. The integration of this data into a singular and broader rights management and business intelligence platform is vital to HFA’s ability to drive commerce.

Responsibilities

• Assist with all aspects of the licensing process; this includes: account set up, license issuance, exceptions handling, testing license programs and generating licensee reports

• Participate in song research projects, data linking activities and song data registration

• Analyze requests and do song searches in database

• Assist with special projects as assigned by management

Royalty Compliance

The Royalty Compliance Department conducts royalty examinations on behalf of the Agency’s publisher-principals to determine areas of underpayment by licensees. The intern will be responsible for assignments involving various aspects of royalty compliance examinations.

Responsibilities

• Analyze the terms of the mechanical license issued by HFA with respect to pertinent royalty examinations, by using AS400 and License Downloads to identify areas of non-compliance

• Review royalty statements rendered by various licensees and perform continuity and completeness tests utilizing MS Excel

• Review label copies for unlicensed musical works

• Prepare various Excel claim schedules for potentially underreported or unlicensed uses of musical works

• Maintain and organize files

• Perform special project and ad hoc analyses as needed

Qualifications:

• Undergraduate or graduate student with a music/music business, finance, economics, information technology or computer science major or degree

• Familiarity/strong interest in digital music technology preferred

• Well organized, detail-oriented, hardworking, enthusiastic and positive attitude

• Strong analytical and research skills

• Excellent oral and written communications skills

• Knowledge of Microsoft Office software – including PowerPoint

• Some experience in Accounting/Finance desirable

• Strong Excel skills mandatory (Finance Department)

• Experience with an accounting application, such as JDE, a plus

Additional Information

The Fall Internship program is a part-time position (12-15 hrs/week). It begins September 2013 and ends December 2013. Program participants receive school credit upon completion of the program.
