Interns work under the direction of a designated City of Richmond leader performing specific and general job duties that prepares them successfully to enter the workforce upon graduation.

Example of Duties:
The City of Richmond Internship Program is a mayoral initiative that is available to current undergraduate and graduate students who are enrolled in an accredited college or university. The program is also available to recent college graduates who will enroll in a graduate degree program within twelve (12) months of employment with the City.
Interns will serve in twelve-week (12) appointments during which they will:

Gain knowledge and skills pertaining to City department projects.
Reflect upon their personal experiences through reflective journals and papers.
Interface with City of Richmond senior executives in their respective departments. The following internships will be offered in the Department of Public Utilities during 2014 spring term:

Pretreatment Program Division

Duties include but are not limited to the following: Assist the City of Richmond personnel in outfall reconnaissance and assisting in the expansion of the City of Richmond’s fats, oils and grease program. Assist with the digitization of hard copy documents. Support the department with special events or assignments as needed. Data entry using established protocol. Clerical Skills such as mailing, filing, etc.
Preferred Qualifications: General work experience. Proficiency using Microsoft Office Suite. Office, organizational and communication skills.
Customer service skills such as answering phones, and greeting internal/external customers. Ability to work well in team environment. Ability to work independently to complete department goals.

Public Utilities Administration Division

Duties include but are not limited to the following:
Assist the Public Utilities Director in: Evaluating policies and procedures to comply with federal, state and local rules and regulations. Research affordability programs for utility ratepayers and develop program options for consideration by DPU leadership. Using the service level descriptions in the service level budget, change the line item method of budget plan into a comprehensive budget plan that describes inputs, outcomes and key performance metrics to better relate budget expenditures to provision of service. Research the files at DPU, the State Library and regulatory agencies to discover copies of franchise agreements and permits that are not currently in DPU files and summarize findings.
Preferred Qualifications : Graduate studies especially in finance and policy analysis. Must have strong writing skills, a strict attention to detail while able to prioritize issues appropriately. Organized, detail oriented and extremely thorough while having the confidence and communication skills to ensure work processes are completed accurately and appropriately. Must be proficient in all Microsoft Office products.

Stormwater and Water Distribution Utility Division

Duties include but are not limited to the following: Assist with duties related to the preparation of the FY2015 budget. Assist the Administrative and Financial Analyst with various administrative duties. Support the department with special events or assignments as needed.

Water Resources Division

Duties include but are not limited to the following : Assist the Storm water Outreach Coordinator with the rain barrel, pet waste and spring fertilizer campaigns. Meet with civic groups, outreach to City of Richmond Public Elementary Schools, and canvas marking. Create small articles for department newsletter publications. Assist department with data entry into department storm water permitting software.
Preferred Qualifications : Strong verbal and/or written communication skills. Proficient in Microsoft Suite Office. Organized, with an ability to prioritize time-sensitive assignments. Creative and Flexible. Interest in protecting the environment and storm water management development.
Applicable Majors/Disciplines: Environmental or civil engineering and/or public education, marketing, communications or other related disciplines

Water and Wastewater Maintenance

Duties include but are not limited to the following: Assist in developing Water and Wastewater Maintenance Asset Management program. Perform data entry using established protocol and standard operating procedures (SOP) within Asset Management software such as MainSaver. Assist with the digitization and record keeping of hard copy documents. Assist in developing department preventive maintenance program by performing moderate field duties of equipment assets. Contact equipment manufacturers to develop recommended spare parts list. Support the department with special events or assignments as required.
Preferred Qualifications : Basic understanding of database operations. Must have a strict attention to detail white able to prioritize issues appropriately Organized, detail oriented and extremely thorough while having the confidence and communication skills to ensure work processes are completed accurately and appropriately. Desire to learn about the Asset Management work flow process within facilities maintenance department. Must be proficient in all Microsoft Office products with a particular emphasis in Excel.

Qualifications, Special Certifications and Licenses:
Eligibility To be classified as an intern in this program, each of the following criteria must be met:

1. An individual must currently be enrolled as an undergraduate student, be enrolled as a graduate student,or be a recent graduate of an accredited college or university.
(a). If enrolled as an undergraduate student, the individual must be in good academic standing (as defined below), and be registered for courses during the internship period. The individual must have completed sixty (60) credit hours and have a minimum cumulative 2.0 grade point average.

(b). If enrolled as a graduate student, the individual must be in good academic standing (as defined below), and be registered for courses during the internship period. The individual must have obtained a minimum cumulative 3.0 grade point average. If an individual is enrolled as a first semester graduate student, he/she must submit a letter of approval by the Academic Advisor confirming that the individual is in good academic standing.

(c). If a recent college graduate, the individual must have obtained their degree within the past two years from an accredited institution and the individual must have obtained a finalized cumulative 2.0 grade point average. The individual must also have been accepted into a graduate program which is scheduled to begin within twelve months (12) of the hire date.

2. Students must be lawfully authorized to work in the United States and are required to present proof of such eligibility prior to beginning work.

3. Students are required to include a copy of their unofficial transcripts with their online application.
