Internships at Career Services are intended to provide experiental learning opportunities to students and develop skill sets that have been identified by employers as the “Top Ten Skills that Employers Seek.”
This internship is unique in because it gives the intern an opportunity to align branding and messages between two inter-related organizations—Career Services at East Carolina University (hereafter CS), and Delta Epsilon Iota (hereafter DEI) the only national honor society in the US focused on career development.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
All responsibilities are essential job functions.
- Create and load content to DEI social media sites to inform members of upcoming CS activities and DEI activities and events including but not limited to Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, OrgSync, Pinterest, HootSuite, etc. and align it with CS media and activities
- Monitor and update DEI website regularly
- Create and disseminate newsletter and/or annual report
- Promote DEI and Career Services events via tabling, resource fairs and other media as required
- Research and identify additional opportunities to promote DEI and Career Services
- Attend DEI meetings to remain apprised of activities
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
- Strong skills in Social Media applications and website maintenance
- Self-starter who is able to work independently
- Ability to use Microsoft Office
- Knowledge of Internet/online research applications and general communication technology (email, phone, fax, etc.)

SUPERVISION & TRAINING
- Will work directly with the CS Liaison to the College of Fine Arts and Communication and Advisor to DEI
- Will meet with supervisor one hour weekly (at minimum) in person to set goals, discuss current and future assignments and events, review progress on tasks, and set schedules. Additional communication by phone and email will be ongoing.
- Will have the opportunity to liaise with CS staff
- Participate in DEI annual training via phone conference session and attend relevant portions of a two day Career Services training and orientation program in mid-August prior to classes beginning. On-going feedback, training and support will be provided.
- Supervisor will assess intern’s achievement of NACE competencies as well as evaluate participation as required by the School of Communication Internship program.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
- Completed sophomore year and maintain GPA of 3.3 or higher
- Enrolled in Communications
- 1 year or more active participation in a recognized campus organization
WORK ENVIRONMENT
- Frequently in contact with others including but not limited to CS faculty, graduate students and practicum students, DEI officers and members, recruiters, employers, students, faculty, alumni, and outside vendors
- Work Space to be determined.
PHYSICIAL REQUIREMENTS
- Position requires a significant amount of writing and keyboarding involving repetitive motions with fingers and sitting for prolonged periods of time.
- Position frequently is required to stand, walk, sit, use hands to manipulate, handle or feel, and reach with hands and arms.
- Position requires extensive use of telephone and face-to-face communications, which requires the accurate perception of speech.
- Position is regularly required to talk and hear.
- Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, color vision, peripheral vision, and ability to adjust focus.
- Occasional domestic (campus) travel required.
