The Tobacco Farm Life Museum is seeking motivated students interested in museums, history, education, digital humanities, digital media, or marketing to serve as interns. The Tobacco Farm Life Museum is in Kenly, North Carolina (Johnston County), just off of I-95/Hwy 301 and details the history of the rural farming community in Eastern North Carolina. Since 1983, the Tobacco Farm Life Museum has been preserving the history and cultural heritage of Eastern North Carolina farm life through exhibits, educational programming, and events. The museum consists of a 6,000 square foot gallery, and 7 historic or reproduction buildings on site. The museum has a number of internship opportunities available for interns including:
Digital Media Internship – Assist with social media plan implementation, assist with running of Facebook, Twitter, and other social media platforms; assist with digitization of archival materials; develop app tour; edit NC Echo object videos for use on social media
Archives Internship – Organize archival collection, especially Brown Family Papers and check for preservation needs; write finding aids; digitize materials; organize institutional records; migrate museum forms to digital format
Education Internship – give guided tours; research, write, edit, and develop guided tours and other educational programming and materials; assist in planning events and educational programs; assist with scheduling and planning for Saturday Series educational events
Events and Rentals Internship – Assist with social media; monitor WeddingWire; update online event postings; assist in planning and promoting events; assist in marketing rental program
General Internship – learn basics of museum work; assist visitors and operate front desk and gift shop registers; assist with collections work, exhibit work as it arises, and special events and programs; experience various aspects of working in a museum
Collections Management Internship – Update PastPerfect records; catalog artifacts; care for artifacts and historic buildings
We also welcome students to express individual interests or to propose a project to carry out during their internship. Internships are unpaid but can be completed for credit per the guidelines of the student’s institution.
