Editorial Internship with Time Warner

For New Yorkers, New York 1 is the only local news worth watching.

 

 

SUMMARY 

 

We offer opportunities to students who are motivated and eager to learn about broadcast journalism and gain valuable experience in a newsroom environment. The following departments are looking for interns who will help plan, execute and coordinate various aspects of news media. 

EDITORIAL INTERNS 

 

General News:  Interns will work with assignment editors, photographers and news producers as they gather, research, write and produce the local news of the day. This internship is split between work in the field and the newsroom. 

 

Local Edition:  Interns will work with NY1’s Queens, Staten Island and Bergen County, NJ reporters and anchors to produce local stories. These positions offer a mix of time in the newsroom and in the field. 

 

NY1 Noticias:  Interns will work with NY1 Noticias’ reporters, producers and writers to produce our Spanish language news channel. These positions offer a mix of time in the newsroom and in the field. Must be bi-lingual.

 

 

 

Pura Politica:  Interns will work with the NY1 Noticias’ team to produce our Spanish language political news show. This position offers a mix of time in the newsroom and in the field. Must be bi-lingual.

 

 

 

One on 1 with Budd Mishkin:  Intern will research guests, prepare transcripts from interviews, participate in field shoots, and collect archival material for use in packages. Interns who demonstrate exceptional initiative and skill will have the opportunity to propose potential subjects to be profiled. 

 

Education:  Intern will work with NY1’s Education reporter helping to write, research, shoot and produce local education stories. 

 

 

 

Business:  Intern will work with members of the Business Unit helping to produce, research and write live business reports from the New York Stock Exchange. Work will be primarily at the NYSE, but intern will also spend time in the newsroom. Candidates with knowledge of financial news and terminology preferred.

 

 

 

Political Unit:  Interns will work with the political team (producers, reporters and writers) to produce NY1’s nightly political program Inside City Hall.

 

 

 

NY1.com:  Intern will work with the New Media team to write headlines, develop content, edit copy and create multimedia stories. There will also be opportunities to get hands-on experience creating photos and video for web and use social media tools like Twitter and Facebook to reach out to our viewers. 

 

Living Unit:  Interns will work with reporters and producers who research, shoot and write NY1’s feature reports (including Arts, Health & Fitness, On Stage, Technology Report and Money Matters) and long-form special programming. 

 

Sports:  Interns will log sporting events, edit highlights, assist in the control room during live shows, attend sporting events and assist shooters in the field.

 

 

 

The Call:  Interns will conduct “man on the street” interviews (with photographer), screen, log, and edit the interviews into sound bites, edit video clips, sort anchor scripts, run TelePrompter during production, and participate in editorial decisions for our live nightly call-in show. 

 

Rail and Road:  Intern will assist our traffic reporters in putting together their live reports during rush hour.

 

 

 

NY1 for You:  Interns will assist producer and reporter on shoots, interview subjects, pitch story ideas, and research investigative and consumer stories. 
TECHNICAL INTERNS 

 

Video Editing:  Interns will shadow video editors learning every angel of the job. Depending on skill level, interns may have the opportunity to edit reporter packages for air. 

 

Technical Operations:  Interns will mix audio, set up studio sets, operate robotic cameras and still store, call up teleprompter scripts, and provide lighting support. 

 

ENG:  Interns will work with the ENG Assistants to organize and maintain the cameras and other support gear for the field crews. They will also occasionally work to support field crews and live trucks on remote shoots.

 

 

 

 

 

CREATIVE DEPARTMENT INTERNS

 

Creative Services (promotions/marketing/public relations):  Interns will assist producers with production of promotions, screen promotion footage and graphic elements, and occasionally accompany producers on shoots. Interns will also work on the NY1 Community Calendar and assist with clerical duties as needed. 

 

Graphics:  Interns will learn how to create and produce various on-air graphics using Photoshop, Illustrator and After Effects. 
TAPE LIBRARY / HUMAN RESOURCES 

 

Tape Librarian:  Intern will assist with classifying, cataloging and maintaining library of video tapes, DVDs and digital files; transferring footage to various formats for tape sales and licensing; and filing tapes according to the in-house shelving system. 

 

HR:  Intern will assist in updating job descriptions and sorting resumes, organize filing of recruitment documents, compile and input employment statistics, facilitate HR events (orientation, site visits, intern activities), and examine organizations, schools, and agencies that would assist recruitment efforts. 
QUALIFICATIONS 

 

 

 

Candidates for internships MUST: 
• Receive academic credits for the internship. 
• Have strong interpersonal, verbal/written communication skills, leadership and organizational abilities. 
• Maintain a professional appearance, be enthusiastic, and have a demonstrated interest in journalism and news. 
• Be able to commit to approximately 24 hours per week.
• Coursework or previous internship experience in communications, journalism or related field is preferred.
