Design Apprentices: Design apprentices will undergo a 6-8 week training period to help them become acclimated to Pirate Media 1’s products and procedures. Following the successful completion of the training program, they will become staff designers and earn a monthly stipend. Designers are responsible for creating design solutions for Pirate Media 1 that have a high visual impact. Apprentices report to the creative director and are expected to work 10 hours a week. Specifically, designers:
- Design their assigned section of The East Carolinian once a week
- Report to Magazine production nights and complete assigned spreads
- Complete weekly Trello assignments, such as advertising, marketing or multimedia graphic design requests
- Collaborate with editors to help bring design visions to life
- Meet established deadlines
- Attend weekly staff meetings
Photo Apprentices: Photo apprentices will undergo a 6-8 week training period to help them become acclimated to Pirate Media 1’s products and procedures. Following the successful completion of the training program, they will become staff photographers and earn a monthly stipend. They are responsible for taking photos and creating videos as needed for Pirate Media 1 that have a high visual impact. Apprentices report to the creative director and are expected to work 10 hours a week or demonstrate at least two assignments a week during TEC production. Specifically, photographers:
- Check budgets on established day
- Coordinate and communicate with reporters/editors ahead of assignments to make sure the objective is understood
- Complete approximately two assignments a week for TEC and at least three assignments per Magazine (with the exception of REBEL and Expressions)
- Meet established deadlines
- Attend weekly staff meetings
Reporter Candidates: Candidate Program participants meet weekly to discuss a variety of topics relevant to student journalism, and they are required to meet other beneficial standards that make for a complete reporter. Students graduate out of the program and are eligible to become newspaper reporters, then editors, copy editors, news editors and, for a few, editor-in-chief or managing editor. They also can be writers and editors for our magazines. They earn a monthly stipend as members of the staff.
Classes taught by an adviser include modules on Newsgathering, Newswriting, Feature Writing, Editing, Libel & Privacy Law and Ethics & Diversity, among others. Additional requirements include:
• Learning AP and The East Carolinian style.
• Reporting and writing stories for PM1 publications.
• Coordinating and communicating with editors and other PM1 staff.
• Meeting established deadlines.
• Attending weekly staff meetings.
