On March 30, East Carolina University will host a full-day workshop entitled “What’s Happening in Princeville, North Carolina? A Tar River Community at Risk,” from 9:30 AM to 3:00 PM in Greenville. It will be a day of living history, community voices, and flood survival stories, celebrating America’s First Incorporated Black Town. This workshop will be a unique opportunity to learn about the first chartered African-American town in the United States, repeatedly subject to flooding by the Tar River and subject to racist politics. Participants will meet the town’s young citizens who are working to preserve its heritage and other key personalities who shape the town. The presentations will include sketches for plans to revitalize Princeville for its residents and for heritage tourism.
