Still Pending – “Official Approval” of the ERHD Graduate Certificate Program

As stated in our previous blog entries, we are truly grateful for the initial interest in our ERHD Graduate Certificate Program at East Carolina University. We are also very grateful for the support from HRSA to fund our proposed certificate program for this year and 2010.

Nonetheless, we are still seeking “official approval” from the university as we continue to complete the revisions of our proposed program for the administration and the university. During the past few months we have made great strides in conceiving, developing and organizing this certificate program. Although we are not “officially” there yet, we are doing our best to provide a needed service to all of you who are interested in wanting to obtain specialized training in ethnic and rural health disparities.

So thank you again for your interest and continue to send us your questions. We will continue to update you of the “official” status of our program each week here on this ERHD Blog.

ERHD Graduate Certificate Program – Open to All Students Who Qualify

I want to thank all the inquires from potential students, professionals and faculty who have inquired about our new ERHD program over the past few months. We have been working diligently to get our new program into the system at East Carolina University and to obtain federal funding from HRSA (Health Resources and Service Administration).

We want to emphasize to all that this program is OPEN TO ALL GRADUATE STUDENTS AND PROFESSIONALS WHO QUALIFY AND WHO WANT TO BECOME EXPERTS IN THIS AREA OF ETHNIC AND RURAL HEALTH DISPARITIES. THERE IS NO LIMIT IN THE NUMBER OF STUDENTS WHO WE ADMIT AT THIS TIME. WE ARE LOOKING FOR AS MANY INTERESTED GRADUATE STUDENTS OR PROFESSIONALS AS POSSIBLE.

We are however, limited in the number of students we can fund to take the courses. Therefore, if you can afford to take one course at a time, we welcome your application and your record so that you can become apart of a brand new type of expert in the field of public health, medicine, nursing, allied health and medical anthropology — Specialists who are experts in Ethnic and Rural Health Disparities.

Spring 2010 Course – Ethnic Health & Health Disparities: MPH 6008

The ERHD Graduate Certificate Online Program will be offering for the Spring 2010 semester the course: Ethnic Health & Health Disparities: MPH 6008. . This course is one of the foundation courses of the entire program. It is a course that is not offerred at many other universities so this is a very special class.

Course Objectives:
1. Identify and assess the major health issues associated with specific ethnic and health disparity populations in the United States;

2. Describe ethnic and health disparity isues, including its unique and important features; and

3. Apply principles and strategies derived from public health and medical anthropology toward planning, implementing and evaluating specific ethnic health and health disparities intervention programs.

In addition to the course objectives, one of the requirements for students in this course is to conduct an applied ethnic health & health disparities fieldwork project or proposal. If you would like to see a listing of some of my former student projects from this class, go to my Course Happenings Blog at: http://blogs.aos.ecu.edu/anth-baileye

Once students complete this course, they feel like they have discovered a brand new orientation and appreciation for all the ethnic and health disparity groups in the U.S. and abroad. That’s what I really like about this course – it challenges our stereotypes and moves us to a culturally competent approach to public health and medical care.
