ERHD Program – Published in Journal of Racial and Ethnic Health Disparities

The Ethnic and Rural Health Disparities (ERHD) has truly come along way since our start just a few years in 2010. With the support of the Department of Public Health at ECU and particularly the previous chairperson – Dr. Lloyd Novick — the ERHD program became established within the system of ECU as one of the unique online programs in the country. Once we began to enroll students in 2010 and 2011, I had a good feeling that we were paving a new way to provide graduate health professionals a higher level of expertise training in public health and medicine that was focused on issues such as health disparities, rural health disparities, ethnic and racial health disparities, global public health, qualitative research, cultural competency and African American health.

With the success of graduating outstanding ERHD students for four solid years, by 2014 I decided that our ERHD program needed to evaluate itself in the manner of an ERHD Alumni Study. With the assistance of our graduate assistant at the time — Shanekia Joyner — Shanekia and I along with Dr. Justin Moore developed the research project and surveyed as many graduates that had the time to complete our online survey.

In March, I presented the results of our 2014 ERHD Alumni Survey study at the Association of Prevention Teaching Research (APTR) Conference in Charleston, SC.. That was a major success and I received invaluable feedback and support from all the professionals who attended the conference.

Now we are receiving additional professional acknowledgment of our program from the Journal of Racial and Ethnic Health Disparities. The journal has published our research study as of September 2015 with an online version and later in 2016 the print (hardcopy) version will be printed in this professional academic peer-reviewed journal.

Here is the article and it is entitled, “A New Online Strategy in Teaching Racial and Ethnic Health and Health Disparities to Public Health Professionals.” After review, let us know what you think about our ERHD program by emailing me at: baileye@ecu.edu. We feel very proud of our online ERHD Graduate Certificate program and all those who have assisted us in varying capacities to keep it going from semester to semester and year to year.

I want to sincerely thank all those who have believed in our online ERHD Certificate Program, supported our program in the past and who are continuing to support our ERHD program for the future. I especially feel pleased and grateful for all of our OUTSTANDING ERHD GRADUATES!! Each one of you are THE NEW LEADERS in the field of PUBLIC HEALTH AND MEDICINE!!

ERHD Program adds New Faculty – Dr. Stephanie Jilcott Pitts

The Ethnic and Rural Health Disparities (ERHD) Graduate Certificate Online Program is a unique program located in the Department of Public Health at ECU which focuses specifically on ethnic and rural health disparities. It is still the one and only graduate certificate program in the United States focused specifically on ethnic and rural health disparities. We are also unique because all of our classes are online and we use the extensive online infrastructure of the UNC system to bring this program to university campuses throughout the UNC system and to other states.

It gives me great pleasure to announce that we are finally adding another faculty member to our ERHD program. Co-Director Dr. Justin Moore and I want to welcome Dr. Stephanie Jilcott Pitts. Dr. Jilcott Pitts has been and continues to be a faculty member of ECU’s Department of Public Health for the past seven years. Her research is focused on examining and addressing policy and environmental factors related to obesity, diet, and physical activity. Dr. Jilcott Pitts is also a graduate of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and is a native of Bertie County, eastern North Carolina. In the ERHD program, Dr. Jilcott Pitts will be a part of our ERHD Admissions Committee.

Welcome All ERHD Students – The ERHD Program begins August 24, 2010

It is my distinct pleasure to welcome all Ethnic & Rural Health Disparities (ERHD) students to our brand new graduate certificate online program! It has been somewhat of a long-time coming yet now we are here together to start this new public health and medical training initiaitive.

The first course in the ERHD program is: GLOBAL PUBLIC HEALTH: MPH 6007.

Global Public Health explores the issues related to the fields of medical anthropology and public health leading toward developing global health interventions. The three major course objectives are:
1. Identify and assess the major components of medical anthropology and public health as they relate to global public health issues.
2. Identify and discuss the major global public health concerns of specific populations from one country to another.
3. Apply principles and strategies derived from medical anthropology and public health toward planning, implementing and evaluating global public health intervention programs.

Our unique approach in using podcast/webcast lectures along with specific assignments through the discussion board and chatroom sessions will enable you to complete an outstanding culturally competent global public health fieldwork project/proposal by the end of the course.

Co-Director Dr. Justin Moore and I are delighted that you have been the first to be selected to be apart of our program and we look forward to many more interested public health and medical professionals to participate in our program whether as full-time or part-time students. By the end of the entire set of courses (12 credit hours), every student will have a new set of public health skill sets that will separate you from the rest in your fields of expertise.

Again, WELCOME TO OUR ERHD GRADUATE CERTIFICATE ONLINE PROGRAM AND NOW IT’S TIME TO GET STARTED!

ERHD Graduate Certificate Program “OFFICIALLY APPROVED!”

Yesterday was a historic day for our program!

We were officially approved by the Chancellor of East Carolina University to start our graduate certificate online program for the university. This is a day that I had envisioned for the past 5 years when I started brainstorming the ideal about creating a certificate program specifically for ethnic and rural health disparity populations particularly since ECU and eastern North Carolina is an ideal setting and institution to lead a public health training initiative such as this one.

From the MPH students in my first courses taught at ECU (5 years ago) in the traditional face-to-face lecture style to today’s online Department of Public Health courses, I am thrilled to make these special courses AVAILABLE for more individuals who want and need this specialized training in ethnic and rural health disparities. Whether its one course or completion of the entire certificate program courses (12 credit hrs), graduates will come away from this program with a brand new set of public health skills and perspectives that will be unique, special and timely for our ever-changing, ethnically-diverse, rural populations in the United States and globally.

This is a new program that is already sponsored by our federal government — Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA) of the Department of Health and Human Services. They have been instrumental in assisting us with the initial infrastructural setup as well as our ability to offer scholarships for those who qualify and enroll into the graduate certificate online program.

I also want to thank the key administrators, coordinators, committee members, council members, department chairpersons, faculty members, Dean of Brody School of Medicine, and family members who supported me each and every step of this certificate program.

Now it’s time to get busy!

Welcome & Capstone Experience Course

Co-Director Dr. Justin Moore
Co-Director Dr. Justin Moore

My name is Justin Moore and I am Co-Director and Assistant Professor of the new Graduate Certificate Online Program in Ethnic & Rural Health Disparities (ERHD) at East Carolina University. I also want to welcome you to our very innovative online certificate program.

One of my major activities with the certificate program is managing the final course — MPH 6009 Capstone Experience in Ethnic Health and Health Disparities. This course has two major objectives for students:

1. Investigate a specific ethnic health and health disparities issue from a biopsychosociocultural perspective; and
2. Complete a public health, research project or research proposal that is culturally competent to a specific ethnic or rural health disparity group.

The online course involves weekly online discussion board assignments, participation in the virtual chatroom discussions, and completion of an ethnic and rural health disparity research project/proposal.

The Ethnic Health and Health Disparity Capstone Faculty Committee (3 faculty members) will evaluate the student’s research project/proposal for its quality and cultural competence. We anticipate that as students complete this capstone course in ethnic health and health disparity, they will not only have dramatically improved their knowledge, attitude and skills in relationship to the major ethnic and rural health disparity issues but also have acquired new public health skill sets that will make them more marketable and employable in today’s public health and medical fields.

We are very grateful, appreciative and delighted that our new graduate online Certificate program has been recognized by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services agency — Health Resources & Services Administration (HRSA).
