2013 Spring ERHD Graduates

On Friday May 10, 2013, the Department of Public Health held our Master of Public Health Graduate Recognition Ceremony at The Brody School of Medicine. Among the 45 MPH graduates, the Ethnic and Rural Health Disparities (ERHD) Graduate Certificate Program graduateed four special graduates. This was not only a special day and ceremony for all the MPH graduates, it was particularly special for our 4 ERHD graduates.

The four ERHD graduates were:

Shamaree Cromartie
Tiffany Cox
Michaela Penix
Samantha Kinney

Here is a picture of our 4 ERHD graduates and I. This was a very proud moment for our ERHD graduates and particularly for our ERHD program. I was so proud of their achievements and honored to share this moment with each of them.

2013 ERHD Program Update

Every semester, I am asked a number of questions about the Ethnic and Rural Health Disparities (ERHD) program from a number of administrators, directors, researchers, faculty members, and potential students. Here is an overview and update of the ERHD program during the 2012-2013 academic year at East Carolina University:

The outcomes of the ERHD program is to graduate new public health professionals from various professional and ethnic backgrounds who acquire a new set of pubic health skills designed to be more culturally competent in the field of public health and to be more culturally competent in the field of public health and to be more culturally competent in ethnic and rural health disparities. During the 2012-2013 academic year, Director Dr. Eric Bailey directed the program, managed the trainees, taught the ERHD courses, evaluated the level of ethnic and rural health disparities cultural competency among trainees, and marketed the program at local and national public health and medical conferences. Director Bailey also coordinated the ERHD Admission Committee and the ERHD Scholarship Committee. The ERHD program consisted of nine full-time students of various racial and ethnic backgrounds (African American, Hispanic/Latino and Caucasian). The ERHD program also awarded $8,000 in scholarship support and graduated seven students.

Welcome to the Fall 2012 Ethnic and Rural Health Disparities (ERHD) Program

Greetings Everyone,

I want to welcome everyone to the Fall 2012 semester of the ERHD program at East Carolina University. It is a pleasure to bring our ERHD program to all those who are interested in furthering their graduate education in the areas of ethnic, rural and global health disparities. This is actually the 4th year of our program and we are very delighted with the progress that we have made in such a short period of time.

In the spring, the ERHD celebrated the graduation of four MPH students and one health education student. During the summer, we had two more students who have fulfilled all of their requirements for the ERHD program. This coming fall 2012, we will celebrate several more graduates from the program.

I want to also welcome the new students to our ERHD program. We have new students who are receiving the partial scholarship support and other students who are not. Overall, we are continuing to work with all of the health and medical professionals who want to further their expertise in ethnic, rural and global health disparities.

We have also been fortunate to receive a new grant from the Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA) of the Department of Health and Human Services of our federal government that supports the scholarships for the public health trainees. The HRSA support continues to help us stabilize and expand our program for so many new public health and medical professionals.

For the fall 2012, I produced a new ERHD welcome video. For those who are interested, here is the link:

If interested in the program or if you have question, please feel free to contact me at: baileye@ecu.edu. Thank you for visiting our ERHD blog and welcome to the ERHD program.

2012 Spring ERHD Graduates: The First Set of Graduates

ERHD 2012 Spring Graduates and Director Eric Bailey
2012 ERHD Spring Graduates

On Friday May 4th, the Ethnic and Rural Health Disparities (ERHD) graduate online program graduated our first set of students. The four students to graduate this spring were:

1. Ashley Allsbrook
2. Brittany Brown
3. Marc Stevens
4. David Taylor

We also had another student to graduate, but she was not able to participate in the graduation ceremony. Our first ERHD graduate was Brittany Parker. We are very proud of her achievement and excellence throughout the program. Brittany Parker actually became our FIRST ERHD graduate.

These five graduates completed or about to complete the four online MPH courses during the Spring/Summer 2012 academic year. Not only did they successfully complete the coursework but they also developed a specific ethnic and rural health disparity fieldwork proposal or project designed to SOLVE and ELIMINATE a particular health disparity. Therefore, each ERHD graduate is a pioneer and innovator in the areas of public health and health disparties because there are no other Certificate Programs in the United States focused on these critical health and medical issues.

Of course, I want to also thank our Co-Director, Dr. Justin Moore, who helped to provide specific suggestions, guidance and direction to the early phases of our program. Additionally, I want to thank the Department of Public Health (Dr. Lloyd Novick), the Brody School of Medicine (Dean Paul Cunningham), and East Carolina University Graduate School for adding these courses to the university’s graduate curriculum. I also want to thank all of the staff from the Department of Public Health that helped me with the procedural forms and steps to solidify the program in the graduate school.

Finally, I want to thank the federal public health agency — the Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA) for supporting our program for the past 3 years. The grants including a stimulus grant provided the necessary funds to support student scholarships for tuition. Their support was very instrumental in helping our students to graduate in a timely basis.

We look forward to new ERHD graduates in the Fall and many more in years to come!!
